Biographical history

John David Zehr was born in Manson, Iowa on July 16, 1922. He married Ruth Lais in 1945, and together they had four children. Zehr was ordained to the minsitry by Simon Gingerich in 1946. He studied at Goshen College Biblical Seminary, earning a Th.B. in 1949.

Zehr pastored Calvary Church (Los Angeles, Ca.) from 1950 to 1958 and Yellow Creek Mennonite Church (Goshen, Ind.) from 1958 to 1966. He was ordained bishop at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church in 1960. Zehr also taught in Bible department at Goshen College from 1958 to 1966.

Zehr was very interested in civil rights and urban ministry. He intended to return to urban ministry, but was killed in a car accident, along with his son, Bruce, in 1966.
