Biographical history
Jacob J. Klassen was born on October 28, 1893 to Jacob H. and Anna (nee Koop) Klassen in Kondratyevka, Southern Russia. It was there that he spent most of his childhood. After completing his elementary education at the village school he went on to study at the Zentralschule in Neu York, a village not far from his home. Klassen was baptized in 1914 by Aeltester J. Dyck in Osterwick and became a member of the Chortitza Mennonite Church. On September 26, 1919 he married Susanna Braun. Their marriage produced ten children including four sons and six daughters. In 1925 Klassen and his family immigrated to Canada. They initially arrived in Balmoral but soon moved to Niverville. Klassen served the Niverville Mennonite Church for 27 years as minister. He was forced to retire from the ministry and sell his farm after suffering a stroke in 1960. After struggling with ill health for several years Klassen died on Novermber 30, 1964.
