Bishop Doerksen's house

This photo is of Sommerfeld Mennonite Church Bishop Abraham Doerksen's house in Mexico. On the right is a wood frame house under construction. One man is on the roof and another on the ground beside the house. A third man stands beside the house. A horse drawn carriage is in front of the house. To the left is a team of horses and wagon. In the wagon are some chairs. Behind the wagon is a tall structure for a [water well?]. There is a tear in the center of the photo and a piece missing. -- Note: for a negative of this photo see 592:58, Neg 33. Also this item is on Mitsui CD disk 4 item 01, digital image in Tiff format.

Correspondence and church matters

This series contains personal correspondence in his role as postmaster and in his various roles as a member of Bergthaler Mennonite church. There are letters from a variety of church leaders (e.g. Benjamin Ewert, Abraham Doerksen, Heinrich Doerksen, P.P. Tschetter, J. Horsch, D.P. Reimer and Peter A. Toews). The series contains his personal correspondence for the years 1929-1950. Church and personal letters are often mixed together. Many letters received by Friesen are from his children as well as from friends and acquaintances that were abroad (Paraguay, Mexico, etc.). Much of this correspondence was produced during the winter of 1929-1930 when Mr. and Mrs. Friesen were in California.

Had. Santa Clara

This photo is of Hacienda = ranch Santa Clara, at Sommerfeld, Mexico. The photo taken shows a house and barn on the left with family members standing and posing for a photo. On the right is a well drilling steam engine with piles of wood used for fuel. A tall pole with a pulley stands next to the machine. In the background are tents and other farm yards. Some chickens can be seen roaming the yard. -- Note: See 590:144, Neg 54. Also this item is on Mitsui CD disk 2 item 071, digital image in Tiff format. According to Peter Bergen's book "Sommerfeld Village", p. 60 this photo is of elder Abraham Doerksen's new home in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Men in the photo include Franz Voth?, Abraham Doerksen, and Doerksen's son-in-law Peter Friesen.
