Conference Session

The theme chosen for the conference, "Jesus Christ Reconciles" was ironic because the 9th world conference experienced difficulties resulting from cultural and theological differences among conference delegates. Some individuals questioned the usefulness of world conferences and wondered whether they should continue, but the delegates decisively reaffirmed the meetings. However, the 1972 conference did result in major changes in the conference structure to allow greater representation, especially of Third World Mennonites, in conference planning.

Delegates at the 3rd World Conference

Christian Neff was asked to plan the third Mennonite World Conference (MWC), which took place in the Netherlands in 1936. As in 1925, the program was largely historical and celebrated the four hundredth anniversary of Menno Simon's joining the Anabaptists. The first part of the conference was held in the Singel Mennonite Church in Amsterdam and the second part at the Dutch Mennonite retreat grounds at Elspeet.

Delegates at the 4th World Conference

The delegates at the 1936 conference planned a 4th Mennonite World Conference (MWC) to be held in the United States in 1940. World War II prevented this. Christian Neff, the conference pioneer, died in 1946. In 1948 Mennonite Central Committee, at the urging of the General Conference Mennonite Church, took the initiative for planning and convening the 1948 Mennonite World Conference.
