American Mennonite Relief headquarters in Alexandrovsk, Russia

This is a dark photo of the AMR headquarters in Alexandrovsk. Caption written by Arthur Slagel - The upstairs windows in sight look out from my room. The window on the extreme right below is my "sanction". The corner room is the main office. On the left - the dining room windows. Above, the guest room. This building was formerly the Dyck house. A small set of personal papers including correspondence to a cousin describing relief work in the Middle East, correspondence to and from Vesta Zook, articles written by Slagel (including the publication of portions of his diary kept during his relief service), obituaries and other clippings, photographs of Arthur Slagel, Don Slagel, and relief work abroad, genealogical information, and a Hesston College choral program.

This fonds contains 276 photographs taken and received by Arthur W. Slagel during his 3-year assignment with Mennonite Central Committee from 1920-1923. The collection has photos of the relief work in Russia showing various aspects of the work including workers, headquarters, storage, distribution, seeded and distributed crops, transportation, buildings and homes. The photos were taken in locations such as Chortitza, Alexandrosk, Schoenwiese, Rosenthal, Halbstadt, Gnadenfeld, Ohrloff, Nicopol, and Sagradowka. There are images of the 1923 emigration group from Schoenwiese leaving for Canada. There are general scenic photos of the Dnieper rapids, the Kremlin and other sites in Moscow. Some photographs were likely given to Slagel from Mennonite workers in Russia, such as the Solomon Ediger family, the Peter Nikkel family, the Johann Janzen family, the Ohrloff teachers and others. And, finally there are photos of travels taken in England, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Poland, Egypt, Palestine and Syria.

This photo is of the Johann Dyck family inside a train car posing for a photo. Helen writes the following description. "The Dyck family with all our "Kab und Gut." Do you see the bags on the shelf. They are filled with roasted buns."
seated in the back are unknown girl, John Dyck, Cornelius Dyck, Jake Schellenberg, Erna Dyck, Helen Dyck, Mary Dyck. Front are two adults, Johann Dyck and his wife Justina. This car was part of the 2nd train to leave Russia in 1923 - the Schoenwiese group.
