Mennonite Media Television Spots, and Scripts, Documentaries, and Videos

This series consists of television spots and scripts created by Mennonite Media to promote ethical behavior and the Mennonite faith, a documentary about James and Rowena Lark (James Lark was the first ordained African American Mennonite pastor), and three videos about American Mennonites and the 1991 Gulf War.

Files pertaining to the production of evangelistic radio programs broadcast in languages other than English and/or made specifically for international distribution.  As the title of this records series suggests, the primary broadcasting language documenting in these files is Russian.  Programs were also produced in German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Japanse, and Navaho and for distribution in Africa, Australia, and Israel.  The records of Spanish-language evangelism programs may be found in the JELAM (Junta Ejecutiva Latinoamericana de Audiciones Menonitas) Records, IV-13-006 or the JELAM Program Files (IV-13-010.6).

Records pertaining to the production and distribution of brief radio messages produce by Mennonite Media  The radio spots, all of which run about one minute,  include seasonal messages and messages targeted at various groups (men, women, African Americans, etc.).  These files contain meeting minutes, news releases, reports, scripts, marketing information, and sponsorship information.

Subject and correspondence files pertaining to Mennonite Media's work in Puerto Rico prior to the formation of JELAM (Junta Ejecutiva Latinoamericana de Audiciones Menonitas).  Materials include information on radio programs produced for the Puerto Rican audience, correspondence with radio stations  and Mennonite agencies, committee minutes, administrative records, financial reports, publicity materials for various programs, and a photograph album.

A hodgepodge of phonographic albums created by Mennonite Media, featuring content from several radio shows, including the Mennonite Hour, as well as independent radio advertising spots and documentaries.  Most Mennonite Media broadcasts were recorded to audio tape and may be found in Series IV-13-004.

These records document an effort to use mass media to clarify who the Mennonites are and attract non-ethnic Mennonites to the Mennonite faith. Materials include correspondence, reports, research files, results of pilot market studies, and scripts for television spots. Also includes results of of a new member study commissioned by Seattle Mennonite Church.

Meeting minutes of governing boards of and committees / working groups within the broadcasting office of the Mennonite Board of Missions.  Researchers will note that Mennonite Media ceased to have an independent board in 1981, when an administrative consolidation with the Mennonite Board of Missions made Mennonite Media a division of Mennonite Board of Missions Home Ministry.  Researchers should consult the Mennonite Board of Missions Executive Board Meeting Minutes for records reporting high-level decision-making regarding Mennonite Media from 1982 forward.
