  • Collection
  • 1915-1943

A small set of personal papers belonging to a bishop of the (old) Mennonite Church who served in Palmyra, Missouri and was a member of the Mennonite Board of Education.

The richest documentation in this small set of personal papers is the correspondence (primarily incoming) regarding conflicts within the church and Kreider's concern about growing liberalism, particularly in dress, within the Mennonite Church and its schools.  There are also several interesting letters concerning chivareeing and serenading.  Correspondents include Daniel Kauffman, Simon Gingerich, J. B. Smith, J. A. Heatwole, C. L. Ressler, P. J. Blosser, D. G. Lapp, J. B. Brunk, Maurice Yoder, S. C. Yoder, and Milo Kauffman.  In 1925 and 1926 with some Tuleta, Texas members -- Rhoda Yoder, Elva Unzicker, and P. Schrock.

Also included in the papers are miscellaneous materials pertaining to the Mennonite conferences of the south and central plains, ministerial meeting minutes, records pertaining to Levi (L. J. ) Miller of Twin Falls, Idaho, a record of marriages performed, information on conscientious objectors in World War I, and other assorted documents.

Researchers should note that the collection has been rehoused into one box and the folder numbers have not been updated.

The papers contain a hodgepodge of information pertaining to Ruth and Rhoda Resslers' various stints in Japan as mission and relief workers. Materials include correspondence, activity reports, the newsletter of the Hokkaido Mennonite Fellowship, miscellaneous materials relating to Mennonite mission work in Japan, and financial records. The Resslers' papers also contain a number of photographs, scrapbooks, and a handful of slides. Researchers should be aware, however, that many of the images are not labeled. The collection holds a several audiocassettes as well: recorded lectures presented by the Resslers in Japan, an oral history interview with Rhoda and Ruth Ressler, and a multi-tape oral history with Rhoda Ressler. Also included is an 1889 statement on dress and prayer coverings, unrelated to Mennonite mission work in Japan.
