Civilian Public Service Camp No. 58 (Farnhurst, Del.) Collection 1942-1949, 1990-2013

This collection documents the activities of members of the Civilian Public Service (CPS) Camp #58 in Farnhurst, Delaware from 1942 through 1946. Camp reunion files give insight into how the CPS experience affected the lives of those who served. Included are D. Paul Miller's personal scrapbook during his time of service, materials related to the camp's softball team (the Red Comb Arrows), The Crusaders Quartet, and later circle letters and reunion documents.

The Ksani ruins in Georgia

This is a photograph of the Ksani ruins (also referred to as Ksanka) taken 2002. This Jacob Dick photograph collection has several views of the ruins of this fortress taken by the men in the Alternative Medical Service in Georgei during World War I. This recent photograph also appears on page 161 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick.

This series consists of television spots and scripts created by Mennonite Media to promote ethical behavior and the Mennonite faith, a documentary about James and Rowena Lark (James Lark was the first ordained African American Mennonite pastor), and three videos about American Mennonites and the 1991 Gulf War.

William Kehler conscientious objector photo album: Portage Mental Hospital

This collection consists of 100 black and white photos depicting Kehler's experience as a conscientious objector during the Second World War, performing alternative service at the Portage la Prairie mental institution. The photos depict Kehler, his friends and staff (male and female), patients, doctors, the hospital grounds and activities undertaken by staff and patients. Most of the photos are identified in the album either on the back or on the adjoining page of notes.
Significant people named include Abe Hildebrandt, Bill Enns, George Harder, Jake Friesen, Gerhard Ens, John Funk, Isaac Doerksen, Dave Dyck, Henry Funk, William Kehler, George Martens, Ed Penner, Darcy Loewen, John Inglis and Dr. Bristow.

Mark Arden Schmucker Papers

These papers consist primarily of newspaper clippings, court records, and incoming correspondence pertaining to the 1982 conviction of Mennonite conscientious objector and Goshen college student Mark Arden Schmucker on charges of failing to register for the draft.

Researchers should note that this collection does not contain copies of all of the court records for Schmucker's case.  Rather, the court records in this collection are primarily briefs submitted to the court on Schmucker's behalf.

Alternative Service cabin at Montreal River camp

Photo is of a log cabin on the grounds of the Twilight Resort in Montreal River Harbour, Ontario. The cabin housed Mennonite Alternative Service men during World War II. Carved into one of the logs are the names of Alternative Service workers Wilmer Wagler (Shakespeare, Ontario), Emerson Wagler (Shakespeare, Ontario), Moses G. Martin and Joe Martin (Wallenstein, Ontario). The man identified as Moses G. Martin could possibly be Morris Martin or Mahlon Martin; no Moses G. Martin is found in the Alternative Service lists.

Betty Klassen conscientious objector photo collection

This collection is about conscientious objectors and alternative service, including the men working at Camp Giekie, posing for photos at the camp, out on the job (tree planting, snag falling) eating, their living quarters etc. Also included is a photo of personnel at Camp Q7 (Loveland Lake, Campbell River, BC). Also some photos of a reunion in 1986.

This series consists of correspondence to and from John H. Enns of Reesor, Ontario. Included are letters to family members, letters from when he was a Conscientious Objector, and material regarding the history of the community and cemetery of Reesor, Ontario.
