This photo is of one of the three large buildings at the Brandon Mental Hospital where conscientious objectors worked in WWII. The facility was closed in 1998.

This is a full-length portrait of Johann Warkentin in his Alternative Service uniform, posed beside a cane chair. The photograph is mounted on heavier paper with the name of the photographer in Russian. This photo also appears on page 149 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

This photograph shows three young men possibly in their Summer uniform of the Forstei, two seated on chairs and one standing in the middle. There is a decorative cloth backdrop behind them. They are identified as Gerhard Loewen, Johann Krahn and Joh. Warkentin, friends of Peter J. Sawatzky when he was young. This photograph can also be found in the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 142.

This is a full-length portrait of Jakob Warkentin leaning on a high stand with his right arm. There is a fancy chair to his left and a treed backdrop behind him. He is wearing the full uniform of the Alternative Service men. Peter J. Sawatzky has written the following in German on the reverse: " Jakob Warkentin was my teacher in Grigorjewka and later my colleague in Leonidowka." This photograph can also be found in the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 142.

This photograph shows Heinrich Warkentin and Peter Sawatzky posed on the steps in front of a building with many glass windows, amidst decorative tropical plants. The two men served in the phylloxera unit which was organized to help control insects in the vineyards of southern Crimea during their time in the Alternative Forestry Service. This photograph can also be found in the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 66.

This photo show two Mennonite men who served as medic during World War I in Russia. It has the inscription "S. Wiebe + Mart. Unrau -- Sanitaeter -- 1917."

Used in CM 4-7-6. Sign at the entrance of the University of Colorado Medical Center where over 200 Mennonite CO's worked. Some of the buildings are visible in the bkgd., also automobiles from the time.
