The Razin Forestry

This is a photo of the Razin Forestry. To the right stand the residence of the manager; to the left the kitchen; and to the front the farm buildings. By the fall of 1917 the government had become so weak that control dropped out of its hands. The forestry service thereby too came to an end. [HR 230]

The Razin Forestry

This is a photo of The Razin Forestry. To the right stands the doctor's residence. Here 232 soldiers served. During the 36 years through which the forestry service lasted, our congregations annually spent about one quarter million rubles on them. During the war the expenditure rose to three million rubles per year. Just before the war, there were in our brotherhood 35, 000 individuals capable of work. A ruble to us in Russia meant the same as a dollar means here to the Americans. It is obvious that it was quite a burden for our brotherhood to maintain the forestry service. [HR 230]

The Old-Berdjansk Forestry

This is a photo of the Old Berdjansk Forestry. The command goes to work. In the spring of 1881 the first group of Mennonite boys began its military service. At first they had to serve four years, later on three. About one thousand boys served. In the summer of 1914, just before the beginning of the war, 1204 men were serving in nine forestries and one extra command. [HR 230] (2 prints)
