This photo is of a baptism outdoors performed by Rev. Jacob Thiessen, in Herbert, Saskatchewan with a large group of onlookers on the river bank. Anna Thiessen, daughter of Jacob W. Thiessen, standing far right. A log fastened to a pole in the river bed leads baptism candidates into the river where Rev. Thiessen will baptize them by immersion.

This is a photo of a baptism in the Alexanderwohler Church, Molotschna, in the year 1930. First row (left to right): Richert, Heidebrecht, Wiens, Elder Janz (Landskrone), Aron A. Dueck (teacher and minister and later a member of the KfK, Margenau), Harder and Plett. [HR 211]

Schoensee Mennonite congregation

This is a photo of candidates for baptism. Schoensee congregation, Molotschna, 1930. Aeltester Alexander Ediger and wife born a Kathie Dyck are seated in the middle in the front. Ediger, born 1893, graduated from the Leningrad University, married married Kathie in 1919, was ordained as Aeltester in 1925. Devout Christian, remarkably able, outstanding musician, good public speaker, Chairman of Kommission fuer Kirchenangelegenheiten, and editor of "Unser Blatt". He was banished to Murmansk region in 1933; later on sent to eastern Siberia with wife. Kathie was sent back in 1938 and Alexander was not heard from again. Kathie escaped Russia and settled in Ontario; her surviving two children remained in Russia. [HR 81]

Baptism in Neuendorf in 1931 or 1932

This is a photo of one of the last baptismal groups before the Mennonite churches were closed in the 1930s. The baptismal candidates are from Schoenhorst and Neuendorf (See Franz Thiessen's book on Neuendorf, p. 76.) In the front row are Rev. Johann Neufeld (Neuendorf); elder David Epp (Chortitza); and Rev. Johann Giesbrecht (Neuendorf). [HR 211]
