Abram Reimer in the Mennonite Alternate Medical Service in Russia

This photograph shows an outside pose of Abram Reimer in his Medical Alternative Service uniform. The handwritten, Russian note on the reverse: Province of Samara, P.O. Petanov, Village of Bogomazov. Abram P. Reimer. This photograph also appears in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick on page 125.

Johann Friesen in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia

This is a portrait of Johann Friesen in the uniform of the Red Cross Alternative Service men in Russia in World War I. He is sitting at the opening of a studio rock formation. This photograph also appears in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick on page 121. Johann Friesen is identified on the reverse as "Tante Greta ihr Bruder" - a brother to Aunt Greta.

Abram Driedger in Alternative Service in Russia

This photograph shows Abram Driedger dressed in the Forestry Service uniform, posed at an arbored gate holding on to a bicycle. This is probably the Asov Forestry Camp. Abram Driedger is a brother-in-law to Abram Dick, donor of this photograph collection. This photograph also appears on page 108 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia, and in Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos as No. 26.

Peter J. Sawatzky at age 25

This photograph is a portrait of Peter J. Sawatzky at the age of 25 years when he was serving in the phylloxera unit of the Alternative Mennonite Forstry Service in the Crimea. He has a shaved head and a moustache and is seated on a chair holding a pamphlet. He is wearing the Summer uniform of the Forestry Service. There is a decorative table and a plant to his right. This photograph can also be found in the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 66.

Two men in the Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia

This photograph shows Nikolai Driedger and Herman Enns seated on either side of a small white table, in front of a scenic canvas backdrop. Both are dressed in the Alternative Service uniform with their caps removed. Herman Enns is holding on to a piece of paper or document in his left hand. There is a poem on the reverse in German written July 16, 1915: "Calm your souls with patience, Strangers of the Earth, Find contentment in God's grace, Soon things will get better. A verse as a reminder and comfort for us all. Your Nicolai" The name Kathe Warkentin is also written on the reverse. This photograph also appears in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick on page 115.

David Cornies in the Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia

This portrait shows David Cornies, a member of the Alternative Service in Russia during World War I in his Red Cross uniform seated on a cushioned chair. His right arm is resting on a small table. With his cap also on the table. The background appears to be a canvas painting with a large bouquet of flowers and a fancy railing. David Cornies is wearing a large mustache. This photograph can also be found in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia, p. 113.

Gymnastics in the Forestry Service

This portrait is an outdoor scene showing 12 men on the ground underneath a high wooden stand. Four men are perched high on the top beam, 3 along the side and two are dangling in the middle on ropes. Peter J. Warkentin is on the right. This photograph can also be found on page 65 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick. It was probably taken on the Anadol Forestry Camp.

This is an oval portrait of Abram J. Dick, wearing a moustache and a suit and tie. The frame of the portrait is surrounded with decorative flowers. This photograph can also be found on page 130 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick.

Gymnastics in the Forestry Service in Russia

This photograph shows a line of 7 Alternative Service men in uniform, two holding on to the paws of an upright dog. Behind them 9 men are perched from a gynastic structure and on the top pole. There are at least 7 men and a dog underneath the structure, This photo also appears on page 64 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

Ready to march to work at the Forestry Camp

This photograph taken on the Forestry Camp in Russia, shows a long line of men, mostly lined up by twos with the Forstkommando in front. One man towards the back is ready to ride his bicycle. The dog on the yard is keeping his distance while he watches the procedure. There is a gazebo in front of the larger building in the background. Anadol has been wrriten on the front of the picture, to identify the Forestry Camp. This photo also appears on page 148 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia where the date August 14, 1911 has been added.

Mennonite men in Alternative Forestry Service in Russia

This photograph shows about 20 men posed alongside and on top of a fence as well as on the grounds and the covered walkway alongside the building in the background. Two men are perched on a two-wheeled cart with a large barrel. This photo also appears on page 51 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia where the location is identified as the South Coast camp near Yalta, Crimea, August 14, 1911.

Celebrating the coronation of the Czar.

This photograph show 16 Mennonite men in the Alternative Service in Russia, taking part in a celebration of the anniversary of the coronation of the Tsar, some are seated and some standing. There are some instrumentalists standing behind the seated men. A section of this photograph is rather faded. The date 14. May 1913 is written on the reverse. This photo also appears on page 148 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

A multi-track railroad in Russia

This photograph shows a train coming around the bend in the distance. Two men are standing alongside the railroad tracks. This picture was taken by the Mennonite medical service men who worked on the trains during World War I. This photograph can also be found in the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 82.
