D. Parke (David Parke) Lantz Papers 1919-1959

A set of personal papers created by a missionary to Argentina and later relief worker in Spain during the Spanish Civil War in the (old) Mennonite Church.  Materials include incoming correspondence, speeches and sermons, records pertaining to relief work, photographs, and miscellaneous materials.

The bulk of the materials in this collection consist of sermons, poems, songs, and catechisms, a church register, and other religious writings documenting Mennonite church and community life in Balk, Friesland (The Netherlands) during the first part of nineteenth century, 1786-1850. The papers also include sermons, poems, correspondence, and other miscellaneous records pertaining to Balk Mennonite life in New Paris, Indiana.

Most materials are in Dutch. Available English translations are noted in the detailed collection description.

The collection is organized into series, most of which are groups of documents associated with the Smid Family siblings and the wife of R. J. Smid. Series include:

A ledger book of sermons written by a minister and bishop of Partridge Mennonite Church (Metamora, Ill.).  Contains six funeral sermons, a sermons about marriage, a sermon about baptism, and a number of sermons on specific scriptures.  Scattered diary entries may also be found in the ledger book.  The collection includes a preservation photocopy of the ledger book, a German transcription, and an English translation of the sermons.  Also includes an undated manuscript assumed to be Esch's.

Personal and pastoral papers of a pastor and bishop of the (old) Mennonite Church who served primarily in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania.  Durr also served as the first moderator of the Southwest Pennsylvania Mennonite Conference. He also served as moderator of the General Conference Committee and the preliminary General Conference in 1897.

Hostetler, Beulah Stauffer, 1926-2005

Peter Friesen Sermons

Sixteen notebooks of sermons, handwritten in German and preached by Peter Friesen in Marienthal (Ukraine?) and later in the United States, where Friesen served as a minister in  Wall's Church (Gospel Mennonite Church) in Mountain Lake, Minn.  Peter Friesen was the grandfather of (old) Mennonite Church missionary to India  P. A.  (Peter Abraham) Friesen.

The notebooks are handwritten in German, and most contain a record of where and when the sermon was preached.

A seventeenth notebook, containing what look to be sermon or research notes, may also be found in this collection.

Raymond Mark Yoder Papers

This small set of personal papers from a pastor affiliated with the (old) Mennonite Church consists primarily of sermons, some of which were delivered at the Mennonite Home Mission in Chicago, Ill., where Yoder served after his ordination in 1939. Other sermons were written for congregational minsitry at the two churches he served: Congerville Mennonite Church (Congerville, Ill.) and Pleasant Oaks Mennonite Church (Middlebury, Ind.) The papers also include information about the history of the Pleasant Oaks congregation in the early 1960s, when it sold its church building. This collection also includes a number of family photographs and a handful of photographs from the Mennonite Home Mission, as well as two audiotapes of Yoder delivering sermons. Photographs mostly date from 1870 through 1930.

Daniel J. Johns Funeral Sermons and Weddings

The collection consists of
1) a booklet of funeral dates, names, ages of the deceased, and sermon texts. A second section lists weddings performed. Daniel's son, Ira S. Johns (d. 1956), used the same book to list funerals and weddings he participated in from 1945 to 1955.
2) An Anniversary Sermon, given by D. J. Johns at Clinton Frame Mennonite Church on the occasion of his 90th birthday, September 8, 1940.
