Conference of Mennonites of Middle Canada Sessions
Part of Leo Driedger fonds
This photograph shows hundreds of delegates from several provinces attending "Die Konferenz der Mennoniten in Mittleren Kanada" (Conference of Mennonites in Middle Canada) at Zoar Mennonite Church in Langham, Saskatchewan in July 1923. Aeltester David Toews presided at the annual sessions. The purpose of the conference was to discuss the arrival of Mennonites from the USSR. Indeed the Conference took place during the arrival of the first train of Russlaender in Rosthern on July 21, according to John G. Rempel. Notice the main telegraph line on the left and the local telegraph line on the right. Also to the right of the church is a faint outline of a large three-pole tent that could have held upwards of 500 people.
