Part of Garden in the Wilderness photo collection (CMBC Publications)
This photo is of a young Mennonite woman attending a telephone switchboard in a Mennonite Colony in Paraguay, likely Fernheim. A local phone-system was established in the 1940s in Fernheim Colony, and for about 50 years this system was the only communication the settlers had to their neighbours and other villages. In the year 2000, this old system was ultimately replaced by fixed land lines and cell phones, which were introduced into the Mennonite settlements in the Paraguayan Chaco in the 1990s.
