Photographs of camp life and work at Montreal River Alternative Service work camp by conscientious objectors ("COs") during the winter of 1942-1943, a homemade calendar for 1942 featuring a picture of the camp, and a colourized photograph of the camp framed with birch bark.
This file consists of photographs from Lewis Reesor's time at the Montreal River Alternative Service Work Camp in northern Ontario. Reesor was in Group 4, which served from 25 Nov 1941-24 Mar 1942. This group overlapped with Group 5, which served from 9 Dec 1941-11 Jul 1942.
Written on back: "General Conference, Archbold, Ohio. Parking grounds." Parked cars in a field in foreground with a large tent and buildings in background.
School children in the village of Bek Bulatschi, Crimea, on the estate of Peter Heinrich Schroeder. Their teacher sits in the centre of the photograph. Abram Friesen is the small boy standing immediately to the left of the teacher.
Written on the blackboard is the name of the school and the date. The transliteration is: "Bek-Bulachinskoe nachal’noe uchilische, 1913 g., noiabria 6go." This translates as: "Elementary school of town of Bek-Bulak [or Bek-Bulachinsk], 1913, November the 6th." Written on back of the photograph: "Beck-Balatskoe (Crimea) (Bekbulatschi) elementary school, 1913 November. Abram Friesen immediately to left of teacher (at teacher's eye level)."
