"Cross of pioneers" on a tree

This photo is of the Canadian Mennonite expedition to the Paraguayan Chaco in 1921 with the cross they left as a marker on a tree. The cross was given to them by Carlos Casado with the instruction to put it up at the farthest point west they would go. The cross was forgotten during the settling years of the Menno Colony. A Fernheim colonist found the cross years later. On the 50th jubilee of the Menno Colony in 1977 the Fernheim Colony administration returned the cross to its original owners.
The following message was carved on the cross: McR [for McRoberts] - CASADO - FE [for Fred Engen] - CH [for Carlos Hettmann] - ME [for Mennonite Expedition] - XX - V - XXI [20 May 1921].
