Jakob Guenther fonds

This fonds contains the diary of Jakob Guenther starting on the 16. Jan. 1945 when he was conscripted into the German army. It continues during the period that he was a Russian prisoner of war in Romania from the end of the war till 19 February 1946. The last entry is dated 20. Sept 1947 written in Canada, expressing his longing to be reunited with his wife and daughters, or at least to have confirmation of their well-being.

This fonds consists of transcribed and translated letters created by Ed Falk with the help of Peter Wiebe and his son Bruce Wiebe, letters originally written to Dr. Abraham B. Hiebert and his family by family and friends in Russia, United States, and Canada. Some letters are general correspondence, others are letters requesting medical assistance, or invitations to funerals. The letters show the connection of family members in various countries, the importance of doctors, and current events in the Mennonite communities.
Includes footnotes and appendices.

This fonds consists primarily of correspondence relating to personal and political matters, including education, alternative service, settlement and genealogy. There are also excerpts and transcripts from various historical writings, materials written by others that Hildebrand accumulated, and original documents relating to Mennonites in Canada and Hildebrand's political interests. Finally, the collection includes some maps of various parts of Canada and Russia and several photographs collected by Hildebrand.

Benjamin Ewert fonds

This fonds consists of six categories of material. 1) World War One and World War Two Materials 2) Conference of Mennonites in Canada (CMC) Material 3) Mennonite History 4) Church Related Material 5) Mennonitische Schulkommission 6) Foreign Bible Society Records. The physical arrangement does not allow following these categories sequentially.

The World War materials record Ewert's efforts to ensure the government would grant military exemption. The materials include petitions, records of financial gifts, articles and correspondence with such leaders as Abraham Doerksen, David Toews, Jacob Hoeppner and B.B. Janz. Ewert also kept a list of Mennonite men from Conference churches who were in the military during the wars. There is also a some correspondence of Julius Toews with Prime Minster Neville Camberlain of England.

The CMC materials newspaper clippings, notes, articles by Ewert and others, and correspondence. There are files on topics such as marriage licensing; articles on the German hymnal, conference statistics, program bulletins for teachers and ministers, the Canadian Mennonite, Canadian Mennonite Bible College (CMBC) conferences, new Mennonite immigrants to Canada and notes on annual conference session notes.

The Mennonite History materials include numerous newspaper clippings from Die Steinbach Post, Die Mennonitische Rundschau, The Winnipeg Free Press, Carillon News, and Der Nordwester regarding Mennonites in Canada, Paraguay, Mexico, and Brazil. There are also files dealing with the publication of Wohin? Woher? Mennoniten, and articles written by Ewert and others dealing with Mennonite history.

The church related material consists of things that Ewert collected through his work in specific congregations, namely the congregations at Edenburg and Bethel Mennonite Church in Winnipeg. Items such as a minister's manual, German New Testament, sermons, and newspaper clippings can be found in this section.

The Mennonitische Schulkommission materials consist of the records of an organizaiton that met with politian Valentine Winkler about the governments interference in the operation of Mennonite schools. There is also a 1892 attendance record for the Edenburg school where Ewert taught.

The Foreign Bible Society records include materials which Ewert collected while involved with this organization from 1952 to 1955.

Franz H. Letkemann fonds

This fonds contains Franz H. Letkemann's Russian school report (1913), personal financial records related to the payment of the Reiseschuld (immigration travel debt) to the Canadian Mennonite Board of Colonization as well as the assistance given to others through the Board (1923-1951) and sermons preached in various Manitoba Mennonite congregations with which he was associated (1948-1982).

David Braeul fonds

This fonds contains a photocopy of the hand-written memoirs of Teacher David Bräul, written in German Gothic Script. The autobiography covers the period from 1882 to 1928, emphasizing Bräul’s experiences in Russia and Ukraine. The story starts in 1882, when Bräul went through a difficult time because he failed the Russian language exam, which he needed for his teaching certificate. In other stories, Bräul tells about his visit to a synagogue and a holiday trip to Crimea in 1887.

This fonds contains an 1884 exercise booklet of Jacob B. Peters from the Reichenbach school on the Manitoba East Reserve, a ledger with mathematical problems from [191-]. The exercise booklet gives an insight into writings exercises as practised in the Mennonite schools in Manitoba, whereas the mathematical problem book gives examples of mathematical problems as taught in Mennonite private schools.

This fonds contains letters, photos, envelopes, postage stamps, and a school exam booklet from 1906 – 1907.
These letters are a valuable set of primary source documents for several reasons. They document a crucial chapter in the family history of Johann and Maria Neufeld over the time period from 1926 to 1979. In addition to that, these letters are a showcase for the stories that many other Mennonite families experienced through the 1920s migrations to Paraguay and Mexico. Most importantly, these letters give an outstandingly valuable insight into the daily life of the 1920s settlers in the Paraguayan Chaco and the moral and financial support these settlers got from their relatives that stayed in Canada.

Johann P. Klassen fonds contains documents related to the organizing of the move out of Russia organized by Johann P. Klassen and Abram Vogt (1887-1968). Includes meeting minutes, travel documents, health records, citizenship guarantee records, and correspondence. Also includes some transliteration organized by Margaret Kroeker as well as transliterations and translations done by Peter H. Rempel.

This fonds consists of a copy of an eight page family registry compiled by Dietrich Voth, in which he documents birth, death and marriage dates. Include is are the dates for his parents and wife's parents, his children, and a page for each of his Voth siblings and a page for one of his daughters and her family. Besides the date and hour of day for the children's births, he also includes the name of the midwife and how much he paid their services, and occasionally how many hours of labour occured during the birth.

Anna Reimer family fonds

This fonds consists of 3 volumes of letters translated into English depicting life in Russia and the Soviet Union 1925-1978. In 1925 Anna Reimer's daughter, Katherina Enns and her husband Wilhelm Enns immigrated to Canada along with Anna's son's family, Johann and Kaethe Reimer. Anna and her other children remained in Russia, hoping also to move later but could not do so. This fonds consists of the letters the family members in Canada received, documenting the situation in the Soviet Union. The letters were translated by Katherina and Wilhelm Enns' children Con Enns and Elizabeth Enns, her husband Edward Enns and daughter Ruth Enns. "Katherina Enns and Johann Reimer left behind in Russia their sisters Anna Epp, Mariechen Reimer, Margareta Enns, Susanna Reimer, Elisabeth Teichroeb, and a brother Dietrich Reimer and their mother Anna (Peters) Riemer."
