Mabel Erb Kauffman Papers

  • US BCMLA 00/MS.435
  • Collection
  • 1878-1981

The collection contains extensive correspondence between Mabel Kauffman and her children, especially to her son Daniel in the 1960s and 1970s. A handful of journals and photos also document her personal life and family history. A few family letters, a family bible, clippings, and obituaries contain information on her father, Tillman Erb, pastor, bishop, and Hesston College business manager. Genealogical materials relate to the Erb’s and also the Hess family of Mabel’s mother. A lengthy autobiography of Mabel’s brother, Allen H. Erb, provides more details on the family history as well as his career as a minister and hospital administrator. Mabel lived for a number of years with her daughter Melva before moving to Schowalter Villa; this included two years when Mabel worked in Kabul, Afghanistan, developing curriculum for US AID, 1969-70. (In a few cases it is unclear to whom some of the materials, especially memorabilia, belonged; perhaps half of the materials in the overall collection are Mabel’s, and the other half are from her father, Tillman; brother, Allen; and daughter, Melva)

Njuta Enns Collection

  • CA MHC PP
  • Collection
  • 1909-1984

The material in this collection consists of genealogical and biographical stories of individuals that are connected to Anna “Njuta” Enns (nee Schroeder). There are also items in this collection such as a songbook and cookbook from the early 1900s that Njuta and her family used while living in Southern Russia. The genealogical records and stories give a look into the lives of Njuta’s family as they lived in Soviet Russia while the other personal items allow a more personal view of Njuta Enns and her interests. Many of the items in this collection were received from Maria Warkentin, a lifelong friend that Njuta Enns met when they were teachers together before Njuta immigrated to Canada.
