Part of Harold Stauffer Bender Papers
½” stack. Three letters, 1933, in German, from G. Bossert, apparently about Anabaptist scholarship. Four letter exchange, 1936, 1938, with Dr. Clarence Bouma, Calvin Seminary: about where to encourage a student to do advanced philological study; Bender did not consider Baptist seminaries strong, Bouma agreed; Bender feared the “Bartian” point of view might prevail at Zurich; Bender considered recommending study under Brunner [Emil Brunner?]—Bender thinking Zurich had “the most conservative German theological faculty except possibly Erlangen; Bender mentioned acquaintance with Dr. Blanke [Fritz Blanke]; in 1938, Bender inquired about suitability of Rev. Hahn, pastor of Christian Reformed Church in Goshen, to speak at Goshen College [ecumenism]. 1932-1934: several small items from Mary L. Bower about a history she was writing about Boyertown congregation, Boyertown, Pennsylvania. 1932: 4-item exchange with John J. Bowman about available books. 1937: 3-item exchange with Milton G. Brackbill. February, 1934: 2-item exchange, Etta Brubacher inquiring about history of Anabaptist and Mennonite deaconess office; Bender replied very substantially. 1935: 4-item exchange with A. R. Brubacher [Abram R. Brubacher, Abram Royer Brubacher], New York State teacher’s college president, about sources to study Brubacher’s Mennonite ancestry (he apparently not Mennonite). September 13 [marked 1936]: Carl F. Brüsewitz of Utrecht writing about beginning what evidently became Bienenberg Bible School near Basel, and about the Peace Group of a conference having decided to join the International Mennonite Peace Committee; mention of Hylkema [T. O. Hylkema, Teerd O. Hylkema; Teerd Oeds Ma Hylke Hylkema?] reporting on growth of pacifism among Mennonites in [Holland? Europe?]. August 13, 1937, Bender to Miss Harriet Lapp [later Harriet Burkholder, Harriet Lapp Burkholder, after marriage to J. Lawrence Burkholder], that yes, she and Ruth Ressler could be roommates. December 17, 1938: Bender to Lawrence Burkholder [J. Lawrence Burkholder], condolences at illness of Burkholder’s father, and releasing Lawrence from commitments to participating in the Gospel Team, yet encouraging him strongly to do so; Burkholder replied he would participate but seemed to say he was turning leadership over to Ralph Hernley. 1932: 4-item exchange with Oscar Burkholder of Ontario, bishop and president of Mennonite Mission Board of Ontario [one Burkholder letter being addressed to Sanford C. Yoder, S. C. Yoder]: about certain historical sources in the hands of Melvin Stutsman, Chancey Kauffman, E. J. Zook [probably Enoch J. Zook, Enoch Jacob Zook]; more pointedly, Bender taking issue with article by Burkholder in Sword and Trumpet which Bender had read as saying church’s education efforts were hurting the mission cause (competing for funds, etc.); Burkholder replied he might have miscommunicated but he would not change a word. 4-item exchange, 1932, 1935: N. E. Byers [Noah Byers, Noah E. Byers] as dean of Bluffton College requesting a transcript from Goshen College—that of Lorene Forney, former Goshen student now enrolled at Bluffton; Bender a cordial, collegial reply, including comments on Miss Forney; also Bender sent address of his brother Wilbur Bender at Harvard. 1934: 2-item exchange with J. N. Byler [Joseph N. Byler] regarding Sanford C. Yoder suggesting that Byler might teach at Goshen; Bender replying as dean about plans for teaching of Economics that included Guy F. Hershberger and Willard Smith but not Byler, unless enrollment increased.
