Arthur W. Slagel fonds (photograph collection)

This fonds contains 276 photographs taken and received by Arthur W. Slagel during his 3-year assignment with Mennonite Central Committee from 1920-1923. The collection has photos of the relief work in Russia showing various aspects of the work including workers, headquarters, storage, distribution, seeded and distributed crops, transportation, buildings and homes. The photos were taken in locations such as Chortitza, Alexandrosk, Schoenwiese, Rosenthal, Halbstadt, Gnadenfeld, Ohrloff, Nicopol, and Sagradowka. There are images of the 1923 emigration group from Schoenwiese leaving for Canada. There are general scenic photos of the Dnieper rapids, the Kremlin and other sites in Moscow. Some photographs were likely given to Slagel from Mennonite workers in Russia, such as the Solomon Ediger family, the Peter Nikkel family, the Johann Janzen family, the Ohrloff teachers and others. And, finally there are photos of travels taken in England, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Poland, Egypt, Palestine and Syria.

This fonds consists of a leather-covered “Snap Shot Album” featuring the face and headdress of an indigenous man burned into the leather. Photographer, J.E. Suderman’s name appears at the top left and the name of his son, H.J. Suderman at the bottom left. Inside are fifty-five (55) black and white photos taken by Jacob Sudermann. Son Harold has supplied photo descriptions which were used as a guide.

This fonds consists of four series: 1) Lectures; 2) Sermons; 3) Theme Sermons (with five subseries on German and English Radio, Conversion, Decalogue, and Stewardship); 4) Study Notes on Biblical Books. These series contain both handwritten and typed notes, and some research using outside sources, for lectures and sermons that Neufeld gave over the course of his lifetime as a minister and professor, as well as for presentations he gave after his retirement. Also included are Neufeld’s reading notes from his own examination of many of the books of the Bible. The material is in both English and German.

This fonds consists of reports, correspondence, and printed materials regarding the investigation of Mennonite settlement in South America, Quebec, United States and Mexico 1919-1921; the purchase of land in Mexico 1921-1922; difficulties experienced by Mennonites in Mexico 1923-1946; articles and correspondence of Schmiedehaus relating to the Mexican Mennonite colonies 1921-1970; periodicals, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings 1888-1970. This fonds consists of a series of record transfers from the conference office. Each deposit has files or material that is grouped under various headings that were used for administrative purposes. Some of the materials were accumulated by specific church leaders. Included were records of conference conventions, ministers meetings, and board meetings of various program areas such as Christian Education and Publication Board and the Mission Board. The conference office also acquired records of the Alymer Bible School which they founded and supported since 1976 and records from congregations that were closed. The research files of Jack Hoeppner who wrote the conference history in 1987 were also deposited in one of these transfers. Each deposit has been treated as a separate series with sub-series.
