This photo is of 4 teenagers sitting on a bench in the town of Reesor Ontario. From left to right is George Bergen?, Katharine Bergen, John H. Enns, Jessie Bergen.
Cornelius C. Penner and Eliesabeth "Liese" (Baergen) Penner were both born in south Russia and immigrated to Canada in 1924. In 1925, he purchased the east half of Lot 7, Concession 3 in the Township of Eilber. Thus the family joined the Mennonite settlement of Reesor, Ontario. The couple had 7 children, 5 of whom survived infancy. In 1927, their son Cornelius Jr. (Neil) secured the adjoining lot (west half of Lot 7, Con. 3). Cornelius Sr. died in 1939; Eliesabeth and her children settled in the Niagara area beginning in 1943. The fonds consists of photographs of family and community life in Reesor, as well as some photographs of the immigration journey in 1924 undertaken by Neufeld relatives.
This series consists of correspondence to and from John H. Enns of Reesor, Ontario. Included are letters to family members, letters from when he was a Conscientious Objector, and material regarding the history of the community and cemetery of Reesor, Ontario.
Home of Cornelius C. and Eliesabeth Penner, 1926. The photograph was taken by Rev. J.H. Janzen. The log shanty was built by Elesworth Kroon in 1922, and a small addition added by the Penners when they took over the abandoned lot in 1925.
Negative also. On the back of the photo is written "P.J. Dyck's homestead at Reesor, Ont. (Stayed for night here.)" indicating that Benjamin Ewert spent the night at the Dyck's home and took these photos (14.473&f.) at that time.
"Eilber school at Reesor, Ont." is written on the back. The school house has 5 windows and a porch area attached to it. Further back from the road (to the right of the school house) is a building which looks like a home.
"H. Bergens home Reesor, Ont." is written on the back. Shown are a wood-siding farmhouse & storage shed with logs piled up beside it. Further back is another building with a slanted roof. The roofs are covered with tar paper.
Three men are working at piling up the long & thin trees which have been cut down. On the back of the photo is written "Partially cleared forest at Reesor, Ont."
"Virgin forest at Reesor, Ont. and pulp-wood," is written on the back of the photo in German. The logs in the foreground have already been cut into similar lengths & debarked. Three men are in the picture.
