Nold and Yoder Family Collection

This set of collected family documents contains correspondence, financial records, broadsides, property records, tax receipts, sermons, and assorted ephemera pertaining to the Nold and Yoder families of Columbia, Ohio, later of Columbiana and Leetonia, Ohio.  Materials document the following individuals, all of whom held ministerial positions in area Mennonite congregations:

Bishop Jacob Nold (1765-1834)

Deacon Jacob Nold (1798-1864)

Deacon John Ziegler Nold (1823-1913)

Deacon John L. Yoder, son-in-law of John Ziegler Nold (1855 - 1940)

Bishop Paul L. Yoder (1897-1990)

The bulk of the correspondence comprises incoming correspondence to Jacob Nold (1898-1964) and Paul L. Yoder.

Of particular significance in this collection is the copy of a petition drafted by J. M. Brenneman to be sent to President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 that pleads for Mennonite exemption from military service in the American Civil War.

The collection consists of early Mennonite documents collected by Mrs. Lester Snyder and their English translations. The documents include various baptismal certificates and letters from Langnau, Switzerland and Stark County, Ohio. Among the names listed in these documents are Christina Schwartz, Christian Schwartz, Ulrich Schwarz, Heinrich Sommer, Anna Barbara Wyss, Menonit Egli, Anna Haghegger, and Johannes Wyss.

A small set of personal and pastoral papers created by a pastor and bishop associated with the Oak Grove Mennonite Church (Smithville, Ohio), an (old) Mennonite congregation in Wayne County, Ohio. Materials include information on the Young People's Conference, a record book of the Ohio Mennonite Relief Commission, materials pertaining to Orrville Mennonite Church (Orrville, Ohio) and Walnut Creek Mennonite Church (Holmes County, Ohio), correspondence with Bishop O. N. (Otis Nathan) Johns, and miscellaneous materials.

A small set of property records and church- and mission-related documents and correspondence created and collected by a pastor and  bishop of Crown Hill Mennonite Church (Rittman, Ohio) who donated land for the Rittman Home for the Aged.  Includes a letter to Christian Steiner dated 1829, as well as correxpondence from Menno Steiner (1905-1911).  Also includes marriage licenses, Crown Hill Mennonite Church reports, and membership letters.

Photographs and postcards of members of the Yoder family, the Shank family, Hubbard, Ore., Nampa, Id, and Wooster, Ohio.  Most notable are the photographs and postcards of Charles and Crissie Yoder Shank, who served as Mennonite missionaries to India.  Also includes photogras of Anna V. Yoder and Vesta Yoder Miller, among others.

These papers consist of one letter from Peter Nissley to Jacob Schneider (in German, with English translation) describing the health of his neighbors and arranging a meeeting among Jacob Schneider, Amos Herr, and himself, and twelve letters in English from John M. Brenneman to Peter Nissley discussing the welfare of the church.

Andrew Stemen Account Book

This account book documents debts to and work performed by Andrew Stemen, a Mennonite farmer and cobbler in Ohio.  It also includes congregational accounts for building maintenance and the purchase of wine, Bibles, tubs, and other church supplies.

This set of records consists primarily of mid and late 20th century bulletins and newsletters documenting congregational life and worship.  Also included are two very early Sunday school record books (1859) a Bible conference program (1905), a centennial program (1962), a congregational history entitled "A Century and a Half with the Mennonites at Walnut Creek," and annual reports from 1984 to 1990 (1989 missing).
