This photograph shows a large group of medical staff loading the sick. There are men and women included. The translation of the German note on the reverse: Sending you a view of our work. I photographed this as we were loading the sick. The sun was shinng directly from the side and therefore the faces are not clear. The cross indicates the stretcher with a patient lying inside. This strecther is carried by two horses. These are only for the seriously ill. The less seriously ill are brought on wagons. The double crosses indicate a covered stretcher. The rear horse is also visiblle with its head on the other side of the stretcher. In the background are the mountains. Only the top of the train is vis ible. Another time I want to photograph the wagons.
There is a second, smaller copy of this photograph decorated with a bold and ruled frame, from Peter Warkentin, as well as a copy in the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 81.
