Mennonite men in Alternative Service in Russia

This photograph shows a group of 12 men posed in front of a building, probably taken in their leisure time while in Alternative Service in Russia. Two men are standing, 6 seated and two posed on the floor. None of the men are identifiedThere is a automobile in the left background with a man at the wheel and another standing beside him. This photograph also appears in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick on page 60.

Roasting fresh game

This photograph shows 3 men in Alternative Service uniforms holding a stick with fresh game on the end over a smoky bonfire. Further to the right a man with an apron, holding a little girl in his arm, is watching the procedure. Another man in uniform is watching from the doorway of a shed behind him. This photograph can also be found in the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 137.

Jakob Warkentin in the Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia

This is a full-length portrait of Jakob Warkentin leaning on a high stand with his right arm. There is a fancy chair to his left and a treed backdrop behind him. He is wearing the full uniform of the Alternative Service men. Peter J. Sawatzky has written the following in German on the reverse: " Jakob Warkentin was my teacher in Grigorjewka and later my colleague in Leonidowka." This photograph can also be found in the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 142.

Peter J. Sawatzky at age 25

This photograph is a portrait of Peter J. Sawatzky at the age of 25 years when he was serving in the phylloxera unit of the Alternative Mennonite Forstry Service in the Crimea. He has a shaved head and a moustache and is seated on a chair holding a pamphlet. He is wearing the Summer uniform of the Forestry Service. There is a decorative table and a plant to his right. This photograph can also be found in the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 66.

Mennonite men takng a break in the Forestry Service in Russia

This photograph shows a group of men in their Forestry Serivice uniforms taking a break. There are about 18 men standing in the back behind the bushes and 10 seated in the grass with their food and drinks. A man at the right is ready to serve from the barrel with his ladle. This photograph is mounted on a decorative matting 28.4 x 22.6 cm. OS

Taking a break at a train stop

This photograph shows a group of about 16 Alternative Servicemen in Russia, taking a break at a train stop. Some others are hanging their heads out of the windows of the train. This photograph can also be found on page 85 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia. Jacob Dick has described this a a pancake breakfest.

Loading the sick on the Turkish front in World War I in Russia

This photograph shows a large group of medical staff loading the sick. There are men and women included. The translation of the German note on the reverse: Sending you a view of our work. I photographed this as we were loading the sick. The sun was shinng directly from the side and therefore the faces are not clear. The cross indicates the stretcher with a patient lying inside. This strecther is carried by two horses. These are only for the seriously ill. The less seriously ill are brought on wagons. The double crosses indicate a covered stretcher. The rear horse is also visiblle with its head on the other side of the stretcher. In the background are the mountains. Only the top of the train is vis ible. Another time I want to photograph the wagons.
