Literature

This is a vast series divided into 4 over-lapping sub-categories regarding Al Reimer’s interests in and direct involvement with literature and written work, including the Mennonite Mirror. This category does not include Reimer’s magnum opus, in a category by itself (see series 6). Neither does it include Plautdietsch (Low German) — the language and its literature (see series 4). For the topic of Arnold Dyck, see series 7 (with Neufeld and Harder). Note: some of these categories may seem bulky. This series of literature-focused written materials was generated by Al Reimer and his colleagues, by individuals with the literary organizations, and by fellow writers and critics.
Location: volume 6667.
A. Regarding Al Reimer’s book When War Came to Kleindarp and other Kleindarp Stories. Files 1-5.
B. Literature in general: Reimer’s interest in and as literary critic of non-Mennonite authors. File 6.

D. Miscellaneous topics by other Mennonite writers. File 21-22

Research for Writing his Novel: My Harp is Turned to Mourning (1985) and for his collection of short stories, Kleindarp (2008)

This series consists of materials Al Reimer collected in preparation for his historical writing projects (articles, short stories, and especially his novel). Reimer researched into and relied on numerous books, journal and newspaper articles, first-hand personal accounts, and various other documents for background information. These sources, generated by other writers listed here, include articles from Der Bote, Der Botschafter, Friedenstimme, Familienkalender, Mennonitische Volkswarte, Mennonitisches Jahrbuch, Mennonitische Rundschau, Odessa Zeitung, Mennonitische Warte, MQR, Mennonite Life, and The Carillon; and books and articles by and about figures such as P.M. Friesen, B.H. Unruh, J.W. Reimer, H.H. Goosen, Adolf Reimer, Bernhard Harder, Walter Quiring, Peter Klassen 1930s, Frank H. Epp, Howard Fast 1947, Cornelius Krahn 1969, Cornelius C. Reimer 1949, John B. Toews 1969, GH 1969, and Peter Dyck, 1969. Other sources include journals and diaries such as those kept by Anna Berg (from 1916 to 1956), by Dietrich Gaeddert (from 1860 to 1876), and one by Heinrich A. Paetkau, Lowe Farm, 1958, about the WWI non-combatant medical service (alternative service) performed by the Sanitäter in Imperial Russia. Some photocopied copies were removed from these files, as these sources are available in archival and library holdings. Reimer’s preliminary notes were retained.
What has been retained are still numerous research materials: generally photocopied documents with Reimer’s notes in margins, many rough notes and drafts that Reimer generated, and much correspondence (often attached to source documents), all regarding his novel. Most files retain Reimer’s titles for his collections; his file-titles are indicated with quotation marks.
Location: volume 6664, files 9-30, and file 41 in volume 6663.

University-teaching years

This series consists of materials Al Reimer generated while teaching at United College (University of Winnipeg) from 1960, pre- and post-PhD, and a graduate course at the University of Manitoba until his retirement in 1990. Much of the material was generated by his colleagues and his students, the U of W, newspapers, and other authors.
Files 19-28 in volume 6663 contain materials relating to the courses taught by Al Reimer.
File 31-35 in volume 6663 contain Al Reimer’s graduate students’ students’ MA theses or proposals.
Location: volume 6663, files 18-40.

Low-German: the language, works, and writers (other than Arnold Dyck)

This Series consists of articles and correspondence regarding Plautdietsch (Low German), reviews, notes for articles, and works by several writers—all reflecting Al Reimer’s interest in Plautdietsch. It was generated by Reimer and his colleagues, and his fellow-writers. (Files in this Series may overlap with the topics of Arnold Dyck and other Mennonite writers).
Location: volume 6664 files 1-8; volume 6669 file 17.

Student Days

This series consists of essays, notes, and drafts of his Ph.D. dissertation. Al Reimer’s undergraduate papers (primarily) are in 7 files, designated by date and topic, mostly on the literary topics he would soon teach at United College, (University of Winnipeg). Files 7-17 all relate to Al Reimer’s work on his Ph.D. dissertation regarding Edward Young. They are the greater part of Reimer’s rather large collection of his rough notes and photocopies of Young’s work and secondary materials. Where some material was removed, the fronts of the original folders have been retained. Reimer’s titles continue in quotation marks; 1957-1968.
This series was generated by Al Reimer.
Location: volume 6663, files 1-17.

Personal: early years and family, correspondence, and the later years

This series consists of materials relating to three areas of Al Reimer’s life: his early years and family, education up to his Ph.D., cards and letters from his young family; correspondence—much of it, at least; and the later years with materials relating to his various personal interests, family history, and tributes, eulogies, and obituaries. As much of it was generated by Al Reimer as was generated by family members, educators, friends, and colleagues.
Location: volume 6662.
