He is holding on to an ornamental chair to his left and has a newspaper in his right hand. On the cloth backdrop behind him one sees some drapes, steps, a mirror and other furnishings. This photo shows 24 men in the phylloxera unit standing in front of their tents, set up in a clearing, with the forested hills in the background. Their task was insect and pest control in vineyards. The photo includes Gerhard Neufeld of Paulsheim, who was shot the night after his auction sale just prior to emigration to Canada in 1926, and David Heidebrecht, who later ordained as a minister in 1921 and later settled in Alberta. Both Neufeld and Heidebrecht were issued silver watches, in recognition of their service.

This is a portrait of Franz Sawatzky wearing the Winter uniform of the Forstei worker in Russia. A note on the reverse identifies him as born Sept. 27, 1890 and died Dec. 16, 1956.
