ATTACHED, Joe H. Garber to Mennonite Publishing House, November 3, 1958 [from West Liberty Ohio; ? Joseph H. Garber ?]: made 3 points--1) Mennonite Church needed better statistics about giving, specifically to its charities; 2)”the tremendous need of a constant aggressive evangelical outreach rather than simply an effort to propogate [sic] our cultural traditions and exclusiveness”; 3) need for an exhaustive writing “on Mennonite ethos”...; cc’s A. A. Yoder and C. Henry Smith as possibilities [?? possibly Lester A. Yoder, Lester Yoder ??]. REPLY, Bender to John B. Mast, January 20, 1949: glad to review your work and give his evaluation; that Smith had died; suggested J. C. Wenger and John Umble as possible evaluators [John C. Wenger, John S. Umble].

John D. Zehr to Bender, May 15, 1956 [stationery of Calvary Mennonite Church in Los Angeles California, Zehr its Pastor]: Zehr had served in that Los Angeles congregation 6 years; in the last five, the community had shifted from white to people of color [racism, Afro-American ?]; Zehr had been counseling to stay and serve the new population but although after some internal struggle the church voted to stay, it never “entered the community” in an evangelistic way; as yet it was largely a white church in “a colored community”; now Zehr had an invitation to full-time pastorship in Zion Mennonite Church in Oregon...; an issue was who might replace him in Los Angeles...; his decision about staying in Los Angeles did not really depend on the replacement question. REPLY, Bender to John D. Zehr, May 19, 1956 [to Los Angeles, address of Calvary Mennonite Church]: had carefully read your May 15 letter the Calvary situation; from that and what Sanford Yoder had reported [?? S. C. Yoder, Sanford C. Yoder ??], Bender wanted Zehr to go to Zion Mennonite Church in Oregon; suggested Paul Friesen as a seminary student to come to Calvary Mennonite.// thanks for contribution to Seminary Fund; Discipleship had not been published for some time.

Ramseyer] of Bluffton College, Donald Reist at Scottdale [Mennonite Publishing House] and Mt. Joy Mennonite Church. REPLY, Bender to John Nevin Sayre, April 29, 1959: had meant to speak to you at Evanston about Trocmé visit to Goshen, but Guy F. Hershberger [Hershberger, G. F. Hershberger, Guy Hershberger] had done so; henceforth communicate with Hershberger.

Martin to Bender, October 7, 1958 [stationery of National Service Board for Religious Objectors; Martin as Associate Executive Secretary]: the NSBRO received Christian Beacon, and it had an article on several persons who met “with the Mennonite delegation in Chicago”; Martin did not agree with Carl McIntire’s work, but a statement signed by some of “these Baptist leaders and sent to Bulganin” [sic] had made Martin curious about the men.... REPLY, Bender to John R. Martin, October 16, 1958: reminded Martin of the many pressures and much propaganda that such leaders faced in the Soviet context [USSR, Russia, communism]; but contrary to the editorial writer in Christian Beacon, Bender was sure the men were not spies, etc. (further comment).
