Peter Hoeppner fonds

This collection consists of correspondence received by Peter Hoeppner (1825-1907) after he immigrated to Canada. Writers from Russia include Isaac Dyck, Joahann Hildebrand, Kornelius Hildebrand, Bernhard Hoeppner, Peter Klassen, and Heinrich Penner. Letters from people in Canada include Aganetha Heppner, Cornelius Sawatzki, Peter Sawatzki, and Ludwig Witte. A few land assessment records are also included.

Khortitsa Volost Court

Two journals record verdicts of volost court for periods September 15, 1899 to January 1, 1900, and January 1 to December 28, 1900.

Documents re complaints to volost court, statements of complainants, witnesses, accused, and record of verdict.

The most common civil suits are of workers against factories for tardiness in wage payments, of creditors against debtors for failure to make timely payments, and of creditors for payment of debts against estates of deceased members of the community.

Common criminal cases involve the consumption of alcohol, violations of sanitary regulations in the slaughter of cattle, misbehavior and petty theft. Information re members of court.

Peter Hamm (1850-1900) fonds

This fonds consists of a diary written by Peter Hamm describing the life of his parents and grandparents and documents births, marriages, and deaths of family members. Portions of this diary related to the journey from Bergthal Russia to the East Reserve, Manitoba were copied by his son Bernhard Hamm.
Bernhard’s journal is in Mennonite Heritage Archives Volume 2047.2. Another family member whose materials are also at the Mennonite Heritage Archives (Volume 1748) is Peter’s first cousin, Andreas Hamm (1863-1936).

Abraham K. "A.K." Friesen

This fonds includes personal letters written by friends and family as well as professional letters. The majority of letters from family and friends were written in gothic script German. Some of these letters have been transcribed by someone other than A.K. Friesen into Latin script German. When A.K. Friesen was a teacher he received letters from the Department of Education and Dominion School Supply. Then when A.K. transitioned to working for Monarch Lumber Company he received letters from The Star Manufacturing Co. Limited.
Most of the letters were written to A.K. Friesen, however, there are a few letters written to other people.

Also included is a free sample of Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver tablets (Volume 6486.7).

Marta Goertzen-Armin fonds

This fonds consists of sketches and handwritten commentaries describing Marta’s childhood on a rural Manitoba farm in the late 1920s and early 1930s, during the Great Depression; they were drawn over a period of fifteen years as a form of physical therapy. Marta arranged her artwork by which of the four seasons the subjects of her art fell into.

Adina Janzen fonds

This fonds consists of diaries and other documents which primarily document the life of Adina Janzen (nee Epp). It includes diaries covering 1940-1943 while she attended school in Kiev. Further diaries cover the period from 1943-1947 when Mennonites fled from Russia into Germany and their migration to Paraguay. These entries document her thoughts, feelings, and emotions during the migration. There are legal records pertaining to her birth and citizenship and family genealogical records compiled at various time which provide family background in Russia. The materials also cover the period after she immigrated to Canada.
