This item is a diary begun by Johann Wall's father Jacob Wall of the Chortitza Colony in South Russia. It is a very unique item as very few diaries from this time period in Russia are available today. The diary begins with one entry a year and then slowly increases to over ten pages per year. Johann inherited the diary and brought it to Canada. Edward Enns of Winnipeg translated the manuscript and Glenn Penner published in Mennonite Family History April 1997 a listing of Chortitza Colony marriages found in the diary. Location: 1086:5, 5a, 7
This series contains a dairy by David Stoesz (1842-1903), correspondence several sermons, a wedding invitation from the Bergthal Colony, an early school organization record, handwritten book of hymn melodies, and a few books. Of special interest is a book bought by David Stoesz in 1861, published in 1834, originally written by Menno Simons and published in 1575.
This series consists of original, photocopied, microfilmed, transcribed and/or translated diaries of: -David Epp (1781-1843), his son, -Jacob D. Epp (1820-1890) and his wife Judith (Dyck) Epp (1832-1906), their son -Gerhard Epp (1864-1919) and wife Katharina (Janzen) Epp (1889-1944), and their son -David G. Epp (1897-1986).
This series consists of Peter J. Dyck diaries from 1911-1931 and materials collected by him such as the papers of his grandfather Jacob J. Dueck (1826-1914), Abram Regier financial records from 1842-1892, correspondence with the Canadian Mennonite Board of Colonization from 1925-1941, sermons of J.H. Janzen from 1937-1939, and material relating to the Mennonite Central Relief Committee, the Mennonite Hospital Society (Concordia Hospital) and the Steinfelder Mennonite Church.
This series consists of 5 sets of registers with 2 volumes in each. The oldest group of ledgers is from the Bergthal colony Russia and were brought along with the Mennonites when they first began to settle in Canada in 1874. These ledgers were begun in 1843. The second group of ledgers were produced by the same church in Canada., where the church was named Die Mennonitische Gemeinde zu Chortitz, and hence known as the Chortitzer Church Registers. There are a total of 10 volumes – five pairs of two ledgers begun in 1843, 1874, 1878, 1887 and 1907. Each ledger was identified as a Litter (book or volume) A or B. ( Only in the Russian era was there a Litter "C" which was begun on the bottom half of the pages of Litter "B" and then continued in a separate ledger. This third ledger is not extant.) The books are patterned after those used in older Mennonite churches in Prussia and Russia. One page is devoted to each family. Opposite each parents' name is the page number of his or her parents' family. As each child married a page number was assigned to them and entered opposite their name. This method of cross referencing makes tracing parents and children relatively easy. The information recorded included birth, baptism, marriage and death dates.
This series consists of correspondence to and from Peter Toews, poetry, financial records, and other material copied by Toews from other sources. A large portion of it deals with church and spiritual matters. Toews also wrote some hymns, which have been photocopied in [1981?] from a hymnbook and placed in this series. A few letters are dated after Peter died and may have been collected by son Isaac.
Documents and computer generated reports collected and compiled by Ed Schellenberg for himself and for others. Some of surnames of the families he researched included Schellenberg, Rempel, Braun, Barkman, Falk, Schlabach, Warkentin and Reimer.
