Sanford Calvin Yoder Papers 1917-1974

Personal papers of an esteemed churchman of the (old) Mennonite Church.  An ordained minister and bishop, Yoder served as secretary of the Mennonite Board of Missions (1921-1944) and president of Goshen College (1923-1940).  His papers reflect his two simultaneous positions within Mennonite inistitutions and provide insight into the conservative / liberal struggles of the (old) Mennonite Church of the early and mid- twentieth century.  His papers are divided into five series:

Viola Good Papers

A small set of professional papers associated with Viola Good, the Dean of Women at Goshen College.  Materials document changing attitudes towards the education of women at the college and include annual reports from the Dean of Women from 1942 to 1962.  Because Good was a strong supporter of international students, her papers also contain international student directories and tributes to Good written by international student alumni on the occasion of her retirement in 1977.

Willard H. Smith Papers

Personal and professional papers of a Mennonite historian and professor at Goshen College from 1929 to 1972.  Smith's papers include personal and professional correspondence, research notes and manuscripts for his books, subject files, class and teaching notes,  and various administrative records from Goshen College and College Mennonite Church (Goshen, Ind.).  Also includes a substantial collection of photographs.

Willard Krabill Papers

The collection consists of subject files on medicine, public health, and peace, as well as working files documenting Krabill's service on the Mennonite Board of Missions Health and Welfare Committee.  The subject files contain a number of papers and articles pertaining to AIDS, homosexuality, and alcohol and drug abuse in the context of the Mennonite Church.  Other less well documented subjects in the collecrtion include Krabill's Civilian Public Service work, mission work in Asia, career as a physician and professor at Goshen College, and his spiritual life.  The collection includes more than 30 audiocassette sound recordings of speeches by Krabill and others on medicine, spirituality, Christianity, and other topics.
