Photocopies of documents, primarily correspondence, to and from "Long" Christian Zook, an Amish minister in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, who led his congregation away from the larger Amish church in 1849. Some documents have been transcribed and translated into English.
Included is a photocopy of a letter by Benjamin Eby dated October 17, 1849 and 4 transcripts and translations of additional letters by Benjamin Eby from 1851 to 1858 as used in the October, 1967 issue of the Mennonite Historical Bulletin.
A small set of personal papers belonging to father and son Mennonite bishops in Virginia. Materials include a photocopy and transcript of Peter Burkholder's will (1813), a photocopy and English translation of a letter from Christian and Anna Kauffman (1842), a letter from Peter Johns and Johannes (John) Greider, with English translation (1846), two letters from John M. Brenneman to Martin Burkholder (1853, 1858), and three letters from Daniel Brenneman to Martin Burkholder (1859). The collection also includes a photocopy of a notebook containing information about the death of Martin Burkholder, but the copy is of poor quality.
Wall's diary 1824-1860 of events in his region. Also a listing of births, deaths, etc. mentioned in the diary, compiled by Glenn Penner. The title "Record Book of the Chortitza Mennonite Settlement 1824-1860" also seems to have been used for this document, although it isn't really an accurate description.
A small set of correspondence, bonds documenting loans of money, and wills pertaining to Christian Reist and members of his family in and around Lancaster Co., Penn.
Researchers should note that these are not the original letters, but rather photocopies.
A small personal collection consisting of an arithmetic copybook and two letters associated with an Amish Mennonite farmer and teacher originally from Mifflin Co., Penn. Yoder later moved to Wayne Co., Ohio. The copybook carried the date 1835, and the letters are dated 1845 (from Shem Zook) and 1861 (from Joash Yoder's son, Eli L. Yoder). Also included with this collection is a note regarding German students who attended the German school in "Irishtown" in 1841-1842.
Two attendance certificates issued to Barbara E. Yoder. One clearly identifies the issuing congregation as the Amish congregation in Logan County, Ohio and the subject of the certificate as Sunday school attendance.
These papers consist of one letter from Peter Nissley to Jacob Schneider (in German, with English translation) describing the health of his neighbors and arranging a meeeting among Jacob Schneider, Amos Herr, and himself, and twelve letters in English from John M. Brenneman to Peter Nissley discussing the welfare of the church.
The collection includes several transcriptions of a letter written in 1873 regarding a church disciplinary issue, and the transcriptions and the original military document from the Bavarian army for Jost Bally dated 1825.
The collection consists of early Mennonite documents collected by Mrs. Lester Snyder and their English translations. The documents include various baptismal certificates and letters from Langnau, Switzerland and Stark County, Ohio. Among the names listed in these documents are Christina Schwartz, Christian Schwartz, Ulrich Schwarz, Heinrich Sommer, Anna Barbara Wyss, Menonit Egli, Anna Haghegger, and Johannes Wyss.
The collection includes Elbing-Ellerwald church record books kept by Andreas as elder, and a large collection of sermons. The authorship of most of the sermons is not indicated, but it seems likely that most of them were written by Andreas except where otherwise indicated.
