Diaries of Aganetha (Kornelsen) Schellenberg. Photocopies of original German with translations

The collection includes a diary 1905-1907; Diary 1907-1909; Diary 1909-1910; and diary 1913-1915. Also included is a diary 1910-1912, a diary 1922-1925, and a variety of correspondence with people involved in mission activities. The diaries from 1905-10 were written when Agnes was single, and when she was between the age of 17 and 23, while living in Illinois.  Her diaries tell of every day events in her life including weather, school work, funerals, visitors, church services in English and German and sermon texts, chores, anxiety over church dissensions, concern for starving in India, great interest in missions, a trip to Oregon, California, and Oklahoma, train ride over Rocky Mountains, and the Inauguration Day of President Taft.  Taken from  “A Guide to Mennonite Women’s Diaries (1840-1950), by Anne Yoder, Mennonite Quarterly Review, October 1996, page 488.

A set of personal papers documenting Alan Hochstetler's voluntary service work in Vietnam and Korea under the auspices of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).  The papers consist primarily of correspondence from Hochstetler to his family in Nappanee, Indiana.  The letters provide a lot of detail about the daily work and activities of Hochstetler and other MCC volunteers.  In his correspondence, Hochstetler also discusses the weather, major political events, and his relationships with his fellow voluntary service workers.

Other materials in this collection include correspondence from MCC and the selective service, slides and photographs taken during his service work, photographs taken during a 1997 trip to Vietnam, clippings, a Vietnam diary, a hand drawn map of the Leprosarium, the Tidings of the Banmethouoat Leprosarium, a service certificate from MCC, and a nine-page manuscript containing personal reflections and recollections of his service work and his return trips to Vietnam.

Photographs, correspondence, diaries,  sermons, and other material documenting the Brunks' mission work in India.  The most unusual item in the papers is Eva Brunk's essay, "My First O.B. Case in Dondi," which provides a first hand account of childbirth and post-natal care and customs in a "High Caste Brohmin's home" in the early 20th century.

Alt Peter Toews collection Diary 1910-1912 and account information

A transcribed, typewritten copy of a diary kept by Ammon Sala, a Mennonite conscientious objector who was conscripted for military service in World War I. Sala left for Camp Lee on October 4, 1917 and was not released until December 1918. Sala's diary entries are very brief, describing one or two daily activities.

The diary was transcribed by Mark Moyer. The original diary remains in the possession of Helen Lenda.

Andrew Hamm (1875- ) was the original author attributed to this fonds. However, over the years it has become unclear who Andrew Hamm (Andreas Hamm) truly is and should all the diaries be attributed to the same individual. We know that the original card catalogue for the fonds identifies that the diaries record economic as well as personal matters, for the years 1881-1893, 1905-1916, 1963-1966. Additional information provided is the author was from the village of Neubergthal, Manitoba.

Andrew Hamm (1875-1944) is the son of Gerhard Hamm (1844-1905) and Anna Knelsen (1849-1916). Andrew was born in Rosenthal, Chortitza, South Russia, immigrated to Canada in 1892, was married in Eichenfeld, Manitoba, then moved to Rosthern, Saskatchewan where his children were born and he later died. However, this Andrew Hamm’s life and immigration dates do not match up with what is described in the diaries.

Another Hamm family in Neubergthal, Manitoba at the time was Andreas Hamm (1826-1892), his son Andreas Hamm (1863-1936), and his son Andreas Hamm (1898-1976). When doing research for this fonds, Alf Redekopp spoke with life-long resident of Neubergthal Ray Hamm. Ray remembers Andreas Hamm (1898-1976) and it is because of this connection that we have decided to attribute the diaries to Andreas Hamm (1863-1936).

There are three distinct time frames that the diaries cover: 1881-1893, 1905-1916, 1963-1966. The first section (1881-1893) is before any of the people we are considering to have created the diaries came to Canada. Yet, the content of the diary in this section discusses buying and selling material, travelling to Winnipeg, and comments on the weather. Meaning the author lived in Manitoba at the time. The last section is written after both Andrew’s we are considering to have written the diaries had passed away. Meaning the diaries from the 1960s must be written by a different author. The authorship of these materials remains unclear.

The collection contains biographical and personal materials related to Anna Gertrude Penner’s extended career as a deaconess nurse, including a set of diaries spanning over fifty years. Perhaps most unique are papers related to her training as a public health worker and two years of work as a public school nurse in Newton (the first school nurse in Newton?), 1916-21.
