This is a photograph of an old woman wearing a dark kerchief surrounded by 2 men and a woman in a garden. The men are both wearing suits with ties. The women colourful dresses. The garden behind seems to be in full bloom.
On the reverse is the caption in German "our Mama's birthday 1 Sept. 1972". The mother is Katharina Pauls Janzen (1882-1974), behind her is her son, Gerhard Janzen (1914-), her daughter, Katharina Janzen Pries (1910-1991) with husband Gerhard Pries (1903-1981).

The barefoot women on the far left is holding an infant wrapped in a shawl and wearing a baby bonnet. She might not be a family member. Two children are seated on the ground. Several of the boys are wearing typical belted Russian tunics or blouses. This photograph is of a father and his four sons. Father, Heinrich B. Janz, is seated in the centre at a small table. The sons are: Johann, Heinrich, Peter and Jakob. Their mother was Maria (Letkemann) Janz (1857-1894. No birth dates are currently available for Heinrich, Peter and Jacob; therefore it can't be determined which one is which.

Fonds consists of letters sent from family and friends in South Russia to Peter Priess in Manitoba in the late 1920s and early 1930s. and photographs. The letters are mostly concerned with the day-to-day activities of the writers, as well as events that might hold personal significance for them or for Peter; they mention everything from daily work and birthdays or funerals, to mass travel to Moscow or passports and the arrests of male family members by Russian authorities. Also included are a number of postcards that were sent to Peter in the 1930s, and a songbook belonging to Anna Janzen, Peter’s maternal aunt.

Katharina Priess is sitting on the knee of Franz Janzen, behind them is Anita Enns. In the centre is Gerhard Priess with Katharina Janzen behind him. On the far right in the bottom is Katharina Janzen, behind her is Margaretha Enns then Katharina Pauls behind Margaretha. Gerhard Priess and Katharina Janzen are holding coats. On the right in the photograph there is a pair of pants hanging on a washing line.

This photograph is of seven young ladies resting under a large tree. They are students at the Maedchen Schule. All are wearing dark clothing and the youngest in front has a white apron over her dress. The names are Margareta Janzen and Lena Eckert in the front row; then unknown and Schroeder; back row M. Wiebe, Helena Unger (later a Mrs. J. Friesen) and Lena Dyck. Inscription on reverse states it was taken when "I" (unknown) was in the Maedchen Schule the first year.

The other seven are not identified. The men are all wearing hats , all different. The first woman on the right has a blanket around her shoulders.
