Horsch to Bender

Horsch to Bender: remarks on The Wandering Soul and on the book by Martin G. Weaver, Mennonites of Lancaster Conference; on whether the “Hofer brothers” story should be in the Hutterite book [World War I, conscientious objection, Joseph Hofer, Michael Hofer, Fort Leavenworth prison—see Gerlof Homan, American Mennonites and the Great War, pp. 147-54].

Horsch to Bender

Mention of “Bro. Brilhart” and of “Earl” [surely Charles A. Brilhart and his son Earl Brilhart, according to a cousin of Earl, Ruth Ann Peachey, and her reading of the letter’s content].

Horsch to Bender

Sending part of Ernst Correll “Preface”; have Edward Yoder read the manuscript?; mention “Bro. Gerber of Sonnenberg” [probably Ohio] and his remarks about bonds that gullible Mennonites had bought to help Mennonite refugees from Russia.

Horsch to Bender

Mention Ernst Correll, and that “Bro. D. K. [probably Daniel Kauffman] is very ill—“evidently the old trouble.”

Horsch to Bender

“Bro. Neff” [probably Christian Neff] had sent “Gemeindekalender”; mention Levi [probably Levi Mumaw] and Ernst Correll’s preface.

Horsch to Bender

Horsch to Bender: mention [Aaron Loucks?], Elias Walter, Kaufman book [see at September 22 above]; D. K. [Daniel Kauffman] ill with a “set-back”; General Conference Mennonite Church missionaries disagreeing, mention of “missionary Boehr” [probably Peter J. Boehr—see GAMEO].

Horsch to Bender

Horsch reply on the books via Walter; that Horsch was being criticized at Mennonite Publishing House for his putting much time into the book and the House receiving no royalty; the historical society should pay the usual 10% royalty.

Horsch to Bender

Horsch to Bender, taking issue with a paragraph of an article by “Bro. Enss” [Gustav H. Enss] in the Goshen College Record—Horsch seeming to find it unsound on the question of Christ’s divinity; mention Hans Denk, and “Prof. Schaff” [Harold H. Schaff???—at the time a writer on Anabaptism].

Bender to Horsch

Bender to Horsch: on getting the Mennonite Quarterly Review issue out so late; mention of Loucks [Aaron Loucks?].

Horsch to Bender

Horsch to Bender: on materials received from Elias Walter; thinking of writing a Gospel Herald article on Dort Confession [Dortrecht Confession?]; more on Kuehler book; mention of author “Bossert” [Gustav Bossert, d. 1925, Lutheran historian who wrote on Anabaptism?], and a review by William Gussmann [Wilhelm Gussmann?] of Stuttgart, sharply criticizing Bossert’s Taeuferakten; attached are several letters in German, one Elias Walter to Horsch, one Robert Friedmann to Walter.

Horsch to Bender

Again about that book by the Dunker named Love, published at Elgin [Church of the Brethren Publishing House, surely]; mention Orie O. Miller.
Date on letter: August 31, 1932

Bender to Horsch

Bender to Horsch: that Bender and Enss [Gustav H. Enns, surely] wanted Horsch to read critically the four articles “Christianity and Religion”, “Christianity and Mysticism,” “Christianity and Philosophy,” and “Christianity and Revelation.”

Bender to Horsch

Bender to Horsch: appreciated the comments on Enss’ articles—Enss had done some rewriting; elaborates; would be sending the Christianity and Philosophy article soon. One-sheet document, typing like Horsch’s but unsigned, penciled “ca. Sept. 1932”, titled “Questions Regarding the article THE TERM ‘RELIGION’ NOT A BIBLICAL CONCEPT”; argues that other words we use, for God or whatever, also have “heathen origin.”

Horsch to Bender

Horsch to Bender: about articles on Swiss Brethren (apparently two manuscripts, by Horsch).

Horsch to Bender

Horsch to Bender: about he and “Aaron” [surely Aaron Loucks] sending proofs; comments on one article.
