Adam, Helen, and Amelia Mueller Papers

  • US BCMLA 00/MS.343
  • Collection
  • 1920-2004

The collection contains personal materials from all three creators, including school transcripts and diplomas, school papers, baptismal certificates and other documentation of their early family life. However, the most extensive personal materials are the writings of Helen and Amelia and the correspondence of Amelia and her family.

The other major category of materials in the collection is family history. This includes several generations of correspondence of Amelia’s family, especially of her many relatives in Germany who wrote to Amelia’s mother Elizabeth Ellenberger, her Aunt Selma Ellenberger, and to Amelia herself, covering a period of over a century. The family history materials, in addition to these primary source documents, includes extensive genealogical research materials. Published genealogies, primarily collected by Adam, relate to many branches of his ancestors, especially on his maternal, Becker, side. He and Amelia both compiled numerous family charts and histories.

David H. Suderman Papers

  • US BCMLA 00/MS.267
  • Collection
  • 1936-1976

The collection contains some personal and family materials related to Suderman’s education, and many family letters are part of the extensive correspondence primarily related to his teaching and research. However, there is nothing in the collection before he became a student at Bethel. Some genealogical materials are included such as files for Suderman family reunions. Education materials include both notes and syllabi, not only from courses taken by Suderman, but also for courses taught by Suderman. However, other than humanities courses and a few music courses taught in the1960s, most of the teaching materials are from Sunderman’s last decade at Bethel with almost nothing from his first ten to fifteen years. There are administrative files from departmental and other committees, including his work as North Central rep and on curriculum development. Very extensive files relate to his sabbaticals and summer workshops and also to the numerous South American activities. Some files also relate to each of his many choral activities, directing church choirs, Mennonite Men’s Choir, Golden Singer’s Choir, etc. Several boxes are filled with a vast array of English and Spanish choral music, which are completely unorganized.

Charles M. Benjamin Papers

  • US BCMLA 00/MS.447
  • Collection
  • 1979-1994

The collection contains very few personal and family materials and focuses on Benjamin’s research, teaching, and political interests. He saved many notes and papers from his undergraduate and graduate work at USC. The collection also contains syllabi, notes, overheads, exams, and other materials from many of the courses taught at Bethel and elsewhere. It should be noted that quite a number of the course files contain rosters of students with grades for their exams and papers, which are RESTRICTED. While at both USC and Bethel, Benjamin collected an extensive set of subject files, many of which he used for his research and as readings for students in his courses. In many cases it is unclear when articles and clippings were copied and for which courses (or for which research paper). He collected and saved papers from many of the sessions he chaired or attended at professional meetings (and in some cases taped them). The collection also contains some files documenting his work and issues faced as a county commissioner. The files for his congressional campaigns are quite extensive, with mailing lists, contributor lists, issue papers, newspaper clippings, demographic data, and much more. No documentation of his work after leaving Bethel are found here.
