Rachel Waltner Goossen Collection on John Howard Yoder

Documents collected and oral histories recorded during the course of Goossen's research on John Howard Yoder's sexual abuse of women.  Goossen's research was published in an article entitled, "'Defanging the Beast': Mennonite Responses to John Howard Yoder’s Sexual Abuse" (Mennonite Quarterly Review 69 (January 2015).  Materials in this collection include documents collected by various individuals close to John Howard Yoder, the various intervention attempts, and the disciplinary process, Goossen's correspondence with various sources close to the events, documents collected by Goossen herself, and ten oral history interviews.

These administrative records consist primarily of correspondence to and from Ezra Beachy, long time editor of the conference newsletter, the  Gospel Evangel (previously the Rural Evangel).  Article solicitations and submissions comprise much of the correspondence, but researchers will also find letters dealing with printing and production and newsletter content development.

Other materials in the records include ministers' biographical questionnaires (used for the "To Help You Know" column in the newsletter), a 1934 subscription list, information gathered for the 1969 50th anniversary edition of the newsletter, an index to the Rural Evangel / Gospel Evangel (1919-1980), and a 1958-1959 study of the efficacy of the Gospel Evangel as a mission tool.

This series consists of files for member congregations and documents communications between congregational leadership and designated conference overseers. The files are arranged in roughly alphabetical order by congregation within each box and include correspondence as well as other collected materials. Boxes 1 and 2 contain mostly files for congregations which decided to close, transfer, or withdraw from conference membership. Box 1 also includes a small set of files deposited earlier, which document communication between conference leaders and selected congregations mostly from the 1950s to the 1980s. Boxes 3 through 6 contain files for both active and inactive congregations and cover the period between 1982 and 2007.

Mennonite Church USA Indiana-Michigan Conference John Howard Yoder Files 1992-1997

Files documenting the Indiana-Michigan Conference's suspension of John Howard Yoder's ministerial credentials because of sexual misconduct and the ensuing disciplinary process. Researchers will find twelve folders of materials authored by conference administrators, the Indiana-Michigan Conference Church Life Commission, John Howard Yoder's accountability and support group, and John Howard Yoder himself. Documents include correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, and follow-up documentation provided by the conference in 2013 and 2014.

Mennonite Church USA Indiana-Michigan Conference Finance Commission Records 1970-1990

Records of the conference entity charged with conference financial management, stewardship, and fundraising.  The finance commission appears to have been formed in 1970, although a predecessor body, the finance committee, met in 1969.  Materials include financial reports (including some pre-1970), commission minutes, annual reports on financial contributions received by congregations in the Indiana-Michigan Conference, stweardship brochures and booklets, a circa 1975 questionnaire on pastors' retirement funds, and other miscellaneous records.

Mennonite Church Indiana-Michigan Conference Executive Committee Records 1947-2000

Records of the governing body of the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference.  Include executive committee meeting minutes, executive committee and executive secretary / conference pastor correspondence, and various subject and data files dealing with various conference initiatives, programs, workshops, and problematic issues.

Researchers seeking executive committee minutes prior to 1947 should consult series II-05-01, Mennonite Church Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference Governing Documents and Annual Conference Records, which contains exectuive committee minutes from 1922 to 1947.

Mennonite Church USA Indiana-Michigan Conference Governing Documents and Annual Conference Records

This series includes the constitutions of the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference of the (old) Mennonite Church / Mennonite Church USA and minutes of annual conferences dating back to the 19th century and including both the minutes of the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference, the Indiana Amish-Mennonite Conference, and the Indiana-Michigan Amish-Mennonite Conference.  From 1922 to 1947, executive committee minutes are interfiled with the annual conference minutes. In more recent years, reports include the minutes from the previous year's conference.

Also found in this series are materials pertaining to a conference-wide study of divorce and remarriage, minutes and correspondence related to the possibility of an independent Michigan Mennonite conference, and annual conference-related correspondence.

Vernice R. Begly Mennonite Camping Research Files

Completed questionnaires collected by Begly in the course of his research on the adequacy of Mennonite camping facilities available to the congregations of the Indiana-Michigan Conference of the (old) Mennonite Church.  Begly completed the research for a course at Goshen Biblical Seminary.  His paper, entitled "An Investigation into the Camping Needs of the Indiana-Michigan Conference to See How Well They Are Being Met by Mennonite Youth Village, Camp Amigo, and Little Eden," is included in these files.

William Wickey Papers

A small set of personal papers, primarily correspondence, documenting ministry, congregational life, and conflicts a northern Michigan congregations of the (old) Mennonite Church. Other materials in the collection include correspondence, reports, and programs of the Michigan Mennonite Ministers' Fellowship (1955-1970), minutes of the Indiana-Michigan Conference Area Ministers' Council #2 (Northern Lower Michigan) (1967-1977), and correspondence and interviews concerning a conflict in the Coldsprings Mennonite Church (Mancelona, Mich.) in 1973.

Wickey,who was ordained a pastor at South Colon Mennonite Church in 1956, appears to have served at the Maple River Mennonite Church (Brutus, Mich.) from the early 1960s through the late 1970s.
