Nold and Yoder Family Collection

This set of collected family documents contains correspondence, financial records, broadsides, property records, tax receipts, sermons, and assorted ephemera pertaining to the Nold and Yoder families of Columbia, Ohio, later of Columbiana and Leetonia, Ohio.  Materials document the following individuals, all of whom held ministerial positions in area Mennonite congregations:

Bishop Jacob Nold (1765-1834)

Deacon Jacob Nold (1798-1864)

Deacon John Ziegler Nold (1823-1913)

Deacon John L. Yoder, son-in-law of John Ziegler Nold (1855 - 1940)

Bishop Paul L. Yoder (1897-1990)

The bulk of the correspondence comprises incoming correspondence to Jacob Nold (1898-1964) and Paul L. Yoder.

Of particular significance in this collection is the copy of a petition drafted by J. M. Brenneman to be sent to President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 that pleads for Mennonite exemption from military service in the American Civil War.

Materials include information on the Young People's Conference, a record book of the Ohio Mennonite Relief Commission, materials pertaining to Orrville Mennonite Church (Orrville, Ohio) and Walnut Creek Mennonite Church (Holmes County, Ohio), correspondence with Bishop O. N. (Otis Nathan) Johns, and miscellaneous materials.

A small set of property records and church- and mission-related documents and correspondence created and collected by a pastor and  bishop of Crown Hill Mennonite Church (Rittman, Ohio) who donated land for the Rittman Home for the Aged.  Includes a letter to Christian Steiner dated 1829, as well as correxpondence from Menno Steiner (1905-1911).  Also includes marriage licenses, Crown Hill Mennonite Church reports, and membership letters.

John N. Durr Papers

Personal and pastoral papers of a pastor and bishop of the (old) Mennonite Church who served primarily in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania.  Durr also served as the first moderator of the Southwest Pennsylvania Mennonite Conference. He also served as moderator of the General Conference Committee and the preliminary General Conference in 1897.

A small set of personal papers documenting the ministry and personal life of a pastor of the (old) Mennonite Church.  Materials include an autobiography, scattered diaries of Hartzler as well as his first and second wives, sermon and Bible course notes, and miscellaneous materials.  Also includes photographs of J.S. and Fannie Stutzman Hartzler and photographs and postcards from J.S. Hartzler's trip to India, the Middle East, and Europe in 1910-11.

John T. Nice Papers

A small set of personal papers consisting primarily of the diaries of a Mennonite bishop in Illinois.  The diaries provide brief daily entries recording the weather, select activities of the day, and sometimes scripture passages.  Of note in the 1919 diary are records of Nice's trips to California and Virginia.  Also included are two photographs and a photocopy of the memorandum book of Morrison Mennonite Church (also known as Mennonite Brick Church or Red Brick Church) in Morrison, Illinois.  The memorandum book served primarily as a record of congregational finances.

Raymond Mark Yoder Papers

This small set of personal papers from a pastor affiliated with the (old) Mennonite Church consists primarily of sermons, some of which were delivered at the Mennonite Home Mission in Chicago, Ill., where Yoder served after his ordination in 1939. Other sermons were written for congregational minsitry at the two churches he served: Congerville Mennonite Church (Congerville, Ill.) and Pleasant Oaks Mennonite Church (Middlebury, Ind.) The papers also include information about the history of the Pleasant Oaks congregation in the early 1960s, when it sold its church building. This collection also includes a number of family photographs and a handful of photographs from the Mennonite Home Mission, as well as two audiotapes of Yoder delivering sermons. Photographs mostly date from 1870 through 1930.

These personal papers consist primarily of diaries kept by a minister, bishop, and school administrator of the (old) Mennonite Church in Kansas.  Erb's began keeping a diary at age 14 and continued the practice almost continuously until his death 50 years later.  Erb's diary entries are usually brief and discuss the weather, work, social gatherings, and events of note, such as the 1912 accident in which he was burned and one of his daughters was killed.  Other materials in these papers include scattered correspondence, materials pertaining to his pastoral work, and a 1991 paper about T. M. Erb.
