This photo is of John M. and brother Isaac Schmidt standing in uniforms outside a building. For a time John served in the Military Medical Corp as a non-combatant C.O. An amendment in 1943 permitted C.O.s to serve in the military as medics without having to wear or use weapons. Military Medical Corp members were issued regular soldiers' equipment (uniform, shoes, backpack, etc.), except rifles.
