Marching to work at the Azov Forstei, Russia

This photograph shows a long line of men wearing light colored uniforms, high boots and caps, lined up, ready to go to work at the Azov Forstei in Russia. This photograph must have been sent by Abram Dick to his parents. A German note in the back reads (translated) Then we will survive these years. I am sending you this card so that you can get some idea of how we go to work. I am close to the front. Only my head can be seen because I am standing on the other side. In closing, many greetings and kisses from your loving, and not to be forgotten, son, Abram. Greetings also to the siblings. This photograph also appears on p. 52 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

A group of Mennonite men in the Forestry Service in Russia

This photograph shows a group of 11 Mennonite men posing alongside a fence amid the shrubbery in their Forestry Service uniforms. Five men are standing, 5 seated on a bench and two on the ground. Back row (l-r): Abram Driedger), remaining 3 unidentified; Middle row: unknown, Abram Dick, Nikolai Peters, unknown, unknown. Front row: persons unknown. This photograph also appears on p. 54 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia, as well in Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photographs.

Forstei Band

This photoraph shows a 14 member brass band of men in the Forestry Service in Russia. They are dressed in their forestry uniform, 9 standing and 5 perched in the grass. The name Kathe Warkentin is written on the reverse of the photograph. It can also be found in the Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos as No. 26 and.on page 58 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia where two men are identified - Abram Dueck, third from left, and Nikolai Peters, third from right.

Five Mennonite men in the Forestry Service in Russia

This photograph shows a group of 5 men posed in front of a bush, wearing their Forestry Service uniforms. As identified by Abram Dueck, on reverse of photograph (l- r): David Dick, Uncle Abram, John Matthies, Heidebrecht, Abram Dick. This photograph also appears on p. 54 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia. There are three copies of this photograph, one slightly larger than the other. The larger copy was from Peter Warkentin, Anadol, 1905-1908. The two smaller copies are 12.5 x 9.3 cm and 13.5 x 9 cm. It has a brief German greeting on the back, (translation) Sending you herewith another group of men. You will probably know all of them. Greetings from Abram Duecks. Nick Peters' photocopied photographs also has two copies of this photograph.

Abram Dick in Alternative Service in Russia

This photograph shows Abram Dick, 1890-1970, probably while he is serving in the Asov Forestry Camp. He is wearing the Forestry uniform posing at an arbored gate with a bicycle. The name Kathe Warkentin is written on the reverse side, along with Abram J. Dick's address, 56 Wigle Str., Leamington, Ont. This photograph also appears on page 61 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia, and in Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos, No. 25.

The band in the Azov Forestry Camp

This photograph shows a large men's band, consisting of three rows of instrumentalists posing outside holding their instruments. The bearded bandmaster is seated in the middle. Both Abram Dick and Nikolai Peters played in this band when they served in the Azov Forestry Camp in Russia. This picture also appears in the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, on page 59, with the caption "Interlude for a photo".
