They were on an outing on the first of May with Arthur Slagel, the American Mennonite Relief Worker. On the photograph are the Thiessens, Miss Hamm and Arthur Slagel. This is a photo of a group of men and women on the Island of Chortitza sitting on the banks of the Dnieper River. They were from Schoenwiese on an outing in May with Arthur Slagel the American Mennonite Relief Worker. He describes it as a nice sandy island, not far from the Alexandrowsk shore, which can be seen in the background. (Left to right): Miss Hamm, Mr. Thiessen, Arthur Slagel, Miss Thiessen, Franz Thiessen and Mrs. Thiessen, whom he describes as the erstwhile "belle of Schoenwiese".
