Alan Hochstetler Papers 1958-1961

A set of personal papers documenting Alan Hochstetler's voluntary service work in Vietnam and Korea under the auspices of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).  The papers consist primarily of correspondence from Hochstetler to his family in Nappanee, Indiana.  The letters provide a lot of detail about the daily work and activities of Hochstetler and other MCC volunteers.  In his correspondence, Hochstetler also discusses the weather, major political events, and his relationships with his fellow voluntary service workers.

Other materials in this collection include correspondence from MCC and the selective service, slides and photographs taken during his service work, photographs taken during a 1997 trip to Vietnam, clippings, a Vietnam diary, a hand drawn map of the Leprosarium, the Tidings of the Banmethouoat Leprosarium, a service certificate from MCC, and a nine-page manuscript containing personal reflections and recollections of his service work and his return trips to Vietnam.

Delbert Wiens Journal

The journal documents Wiens's service as a Mennonite Centeral Committee relief worker in Vietnam from 1954 to 1956. The typewritten journal began as a diary with handwritten comments that was sent to friends and family.  Later entries are more deliberately written as letters or reports, with fewer daily entries.  Wiens provides detailed descriptions of his work, the social conditions, and his interactions with the Vietnamese and other relief workers.

These papers consist primarily of incoming professional, pastoral, and personal correspondence.  Of particular note are the two folders of incoming and outgoing correspondence between basketball coach Bobby Knight and Bob Detweiler (1971-1987).  Additional materials in the collection include sermon notes and outlines and dairies from Detweiler's college and seminary years.

George Neufeld fonds

This fonds the three diaries and thirty three photographs covering the time Neufeld spent working with MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) in England, France, and Germany. The diaries record what Neufeld did but also his thoughts and feelings as he worked in war torn Europe.

Gordon Oyer Collection on Civilian Public Service Camp #115 Subunit #30 (Urbana, Ill.)

A set of research materials assembled by Gordon Oyer to write an article on the history Civilian Public Service in Illinois, including CPS Camp #115, Subunit #30.  CPS volunteers at this camp were "guinea pigs" for medical experiments studying the physiological effects of heat and tropical conditions.  Camp #115 was a cooperative agency administered the Mennonites, Brethren, and Friends under the direction of the Office of Scientific Research and Development.  Subunit #30 was administered by Mennonite Central Committee.

Materials in this collection include the diaries of two CPS volunteer participants in these experiments:  Duane Hougham (Methodist) and George Nachtigall (Mennonite Brethren).  Nachtigall's diary is a photocopy of the original.  Also included are letters with CPS volunteers stationed in Illinois, clippings, and a copy of Oyer's article.

Personal papers of a prominent administrator who held leadership positions in multiple Mennonite-related organizations over a career spanning four decades between 1953 and 1993. Kraybill also served as a board member and organizational consultant for a variety of institutions, including the American Leprosy Mission, Lancaster Mennonite School, and Lombard Mennonite Church. Materials consist of daily calendars, administrative trip reports, writings and manuscripts, photographs, scattered correspondence, committee minutes, and organizational working files.
