Alvin J. Miller Papers 1912-1930

An instrumental humanitarian in the Mennonite Church, Alvin J. Miller engaged in relief work in France, Crimea, and Constantinople with the American Friends Service Committee and the Red Cross. He later served in the American Relief Association and also with the American Mennonite Relief in Russia (1921-1926). Miller also assisted with the colonization committees helping to place Russian Mennonite refugees onto Canadian farms and seeling second mortgage Farm Lien Bonds to American Amish and Mennonite buyers to raise money for this venture (1927-1930). His personal collection includes correspondence, documents and reports documenting these experiences.

David J. Krehbiel Papers

Most of the papers document his conscientious objector status at Camp Funston during World War I.

Also included is an 1874 Russian passport of his grandfather Daniel Krehbiel, and his own passport from a 1968 service trip to Paraguay.

Papers found in a 1744 Froschauer Bible containing family records of the Esch and Hage families, documentation interpreting the papers, and transcripts / translations of most of the papers.  Papers include:

(1) Attestation of tenancy at various estates in Bavaria (Forsthof, 24 March 1819; Kirchstockach, 29 March 1819 and 1 December 1821; Probfeld, 16 May 1824, Josephenburg, 15 APril 1826 and 8 May 1826).

(2) Passport for Friedrich Hage, wife, two children, and hired hand, 1826.

(3) Letter regarding possibility of immigration to Brazil, Hamburg, 20 July 1825

(4) Receipt for passage from Hamburg to Philadelphia, 29 June 1826.

(5) Miscellaneous items from the Esch-Hage-Bontrager family.

Friedrich Hage was an Amish-Mennonite minister in Germany who later served as an Amish bishop in Holmes County, Ohio.
