Financial reports, account books, and treasurer's correspondence documenting the financial operations of the American Mennonite Mission in Dhamtari, India.  Researchers should note that real estate records pertaining to properties purchased and sold by the mission may be found in S. Paul Miller's personal papers (HM1-379).

Consists primarily of miscellaneous pre-1930  photographic prints documenting the Dhamtari mission, its workers, and those served by the mission.  Also includes a scrapbook of the Bihar mission created by Esther and Milton Vogt.

Assorted records created by the American Mennonite Mission in India, including membership and marriage registers for Indian churches, maps, pamphlets, furniture inventories, hospital records, articles and leaflets, and other miscellaneous materials.  This series includes the statement of comity agreed to by the various denominational mission organizations in India, which stated mission workers' commitment to corking cooperatively rather than competitively.

Incoming and outgoing admistrative correspondence from the highest office of the American Mennonite Mission in India.  Correspondence includes communications between the mission board in the United States as well as Indian government officials.  These records also include ledger books listing the names of donors who provided financial sponsorship of Indian orphans.

Assorted records pertaining to the mission industrial schools, industrial workshop, orphanage, and primary, middle, and high schools.  Records include correspondence, reports, attendee lists, and miscellaneous materials.

Records of the various mission outposts operated by the American Mennonite Mission, including Baloghahan, Dondi, Ghatula, Mohadi, and Sankra.  Also includes records pertaining to the girls' orphanage and the leper asylum.  Materials include reports, correspondence, and ledger books containing records of activities at the various stations.

The core records of the American Mennonite Mission, India are divided into three series:

(1) Annual Reports, 1902-1929

(2) Business Meeting Minutes, 1910-1952

(3) Constitution and By-Laws, 1908-1909, 1920

Researchers should note that the only minutes included in these records are the business meeting minutes.  Other meeting minutes may be found elsewhere in the records of the American Mennonite Mission (Dhamtari, India), IV-17.

A hodgepodge of letters that includes correspondence regarding missionaries' passport and residency issues, correspondence with Indian college students sponsored by the mission, letters from mission staff in Elkhart, Ind. circulated among the missionaries, and correspondence pertaining to clothing and bedding orders filled by various Mennonite sewing circles.

Committee meeting minutes, evangelism record books, correspondence, and miscellaneous materials pertaining to American Mennonite Mission's efforts to convert Hindu and Muslim Indians to Christianity.  Meeting minutes generally do not discuss overall mission strategy, but focus on the assignments, performance, and financial compensation of Indian evangelists,  The evangelism record books provide in-depth accounts of preaching and books distributed to various villages.  Researchers should be aware, however, that these record books are in Hindi.  Also of interest in this series are the records pertaining to the Bible Women, who evangelized on behalf of the Mennonite mission.  Mennonite missionaries' evaluations of the Bible Women are in English, while the Bible Women's evangelism records are in Hindi.

These records document the work of an organization of missionary women that guided the work of the Indian Bible Women and the sewing circles in India.  Meeting minutes comprise the bulk of the records.

Meeting minutes documenting the work of the committee charged with managing the finances, property, and human resources of the American Mennonite Mission in India.  It appears that executive committee and the managing committee are two names for the same body.  This series also includes an index to the meeting minutes (1939-1945, 1949-1950) and scattered correspondence and miscellaneous records.

Researchers should note that earlier minutes for the executive committee may be found in the American Mennonite Mission (Dhamtari, India) Secretary Correspondence and Subject Files (IV-17-004).

These records contain the minutes, governing records, correspondence, and other materials documenting the development of the Mennonite Church in India.  The Mennonite Church in India began as a conference of Mennonite congregations under the auspices of the American Mennonite Mission.  In 1952, when the American Mennonite Mission ceased to exist, the Mennonite Church in India became an independent entity.  Of particular interest in these records is the Church Problems and Discipline File, which provides evidence of tensions between indigenous Indian Christians and mission staff regarding authority and power withing the Mennonite Church.

Committee meeting minutes, primary school reports, scholarship applications, curricula, and other records pertaining to the educational institutions supported by the American Mennonite Mission.  These institutions included the Dhamtari Christian Academy and a number of elementary and vocational schools.  Minutes of the education committee concern the progress of individual students, scholarship awards and the curriculum..
