1973 Crop failure and poverty in Chad

This photo is of a woman and child in Chad. The woman has just received millet purchased with MCC funds in Abéché, eastern Chad. The two of them are kneeling in the sand beside a makeshift tent which is partly visible on the right side of the photo.
Text on back is: "For the last two years we have had complete crop failure in our village. Already we have sold most of our possessions. Many men have left the village but someone must take care of the women and children. One month after the crops have been gathered we have nothing left in our granaries."

A well in Chad

This photo is of two women getting water at a well in Chad. The woman on the left side of the photo has a long rope tied around a jug. The ground looks dry and barren. The description on the back says, "The water level in this well in the Sahel is as low now as it was at the beginning of the dry season. Wells must be dug deeper. Water is drawn by hand, usually by women."

MCC meeting local tribal chiefs at Matadjene in eastern Chad

This photo is of tribal chiefs at Matadjene in eastern Chad, who are meeting with MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) representatives. The photo shows men in mainly light-coloured robes wearing turbans on their heads.
On the back of the photo it says, "At Matadjene, a 'water hole' in eastern chad, MCC representatives met with local tribal chiefsto discuss their needs. Water is obviously the number one problem. Crops have not matured because the rains stopped early. Cattle are dying and hyenas kill many of the remaining, weakened beasts. Tea and sugar is necessary, but difficult to obtain. In times of severe food shortage, these people can survive for a time on two bowls of tea with sugar each day. They would readily evaporate with any efforts to build dams or make ponds in order to preserve water. As solid Muslim leaders, they regard drought and aid alike as the will of Allah.

Paul Horola, Ray Brubacher, and Gilbert Klopfenstein

This photo is of three men, Paul Horala, Ray Brubacher, and Gilbert Klopfenstein , in eastern Chad.
The description at the back of the photo says, "At Matadjene, a 'water hole' in eastern Chad, Paul Horala, a French missionary, dispenses medical supplies and performing (sic) the services of nurse and doctor to six thousand persons of that community. MCC was encouraged to assist in building water reservoirs which could then be used for human purposes as well as livestock and irrigation. Horala has done pioneer work in this area. Here he is demonsrtating to Ray Brubacher of the MCC Africa department and to Gilbert Klopfenstein, French Mennonite missionary in Chad, the effects of water on the soil in that area.
