Ausrufen = Auction Sales

This sub series consists an alphabetized ledger of co-signers who guaranteed loans that individual members of the community obtained from the Waisenamt. These members are named and cross-referenced to the Schuldbuch (Debt Ledger) in which the loan was recorded. Most of the entries are stroked out, likely meaning that the loan has been paid and the guarantor is free of obligation in that regard. Many auctions are grouped within one notebook hence the numbering system.
Location: volume 6322-6323.

Bergthal colony/Chortitzer Church registers

This series consists of 5 sets of registers with 2 volumes in each. The oldest group of ledgers is from the Bergthal colony Russia and were brought along with the Mennonites when they first began to settle in Canada in 1874. These ledgers were begun in 1843. The second group of ledgers were produced by the same church in Canada., where the church was named Die Mennonitische Gemeinde zu Chortitz, and hence known as the Chortitzer Church Registers. There are a total of 10 volumes – five pairs of two ledgers begun in 1843, 1874, 1878, 1887 and 1907. Each ledger was identified as a Litter (book or volume) A or B. ( Only in the Russian era was there a Litter "C" which was begun on the bottom half of the pages of Litter "B" and then continued in a separate ledger. This third ledger is not extant.) The books are patterned after those used in older Mennonite churches in Prussia and Russia. One page is devoted to each family. Opposite each parents' name is the page number of his or her parents' family. As each child married a page number was assigned to them and entered opposite their name. This method of cross referencing makes tracing parents and children relatively easy. The information recorded included birth, baptism, marriage and death dates.

Chortitzer Mennonite Conference annual reports

This series is an incomplete collection of the reports books issued for the annual conventions of the conference. These books contain reports of various programs of the conference and financial statements. They also contain information of births, deaths, marriages and baptisms that occurred that particular year in the conference.

Chortitzer Mennonite Conference fonds

  • CA MHC ORG
  • Fonds
  • 1810, 1843-1993, predominant 1843-1931

The earliest records in this fonds date back to 1843 when a church membership register was begun in the Bergthal Colony in South Russia - a book which was brought along with the emigrants in 1874. The membership records in this fonds continue to cover the period in Canada from 1874 onward. After 1930 the records at the Mennonite Heritage Centre dealing with the Chortitzer Mennonite church are extremely sparse. The collection comprises of some preaching schedules and annual report books. The bulk of the materials are from the Waidenamt organization.

The most unique and important document is the letter of invitation (Privilegium) signed by John Lowe of Canada's department of agriculture in July 1873.

This fond consists of three series :
-1) Bergthaler/Chortitzer church registers
-2) Waisenamt twelve sub series
-3) Chortitzer Mennonite Conference annual report books

Einnahmen und Ausgaben = Income and Disbursements

This sub series consists of hard-cover ledgers detailing the financial transactions recording the day-to-day income and disbursements. Each page gives the running totals at the bottom which are forwarded to the top of the corresponding next page. These ledgers reveal the amounts that were handled by the Waisenamt both in its function as a trust company for the orphans and widows, and those amounts that pertained to its function as a bank. Note: Files #14 & #15 were not digitized.
Location: volume 6317.

Estate Records

This sub series consists of mortgages, land titles, correspondence and other legal documents regarding the winding up of an estate in which the Waisenamt was involved. The groupings have been sorted alphabetically but within each grouping kept as they were prior to 2016.
Location: volume 6329-6331.

Kapital Bücher = ledgers listing capital

This series consists of financial ledgers used to keep track of financial capital the Waisenamt held. Files 1-4 are indexes only. Some capital ledgers include transfers of money to the Fürsorge Komitee in Paraguay, particularly Capital Ledgers “A” Chortitz (File #9) & “A” Osterwick (#10), which are otherwise mainly duplicates of each other. There are other duplicate ledgers, e.g. Ledger “B”file #11 and Ledger “C” #12 are virtually identical. The date on the cover of the Ledger is the date the Ledger was created. The dates given in the file name also include the year of the latest entries in the Ledger, often in a different hand writing or different colour of ink. Ledgers frequently list heirs to an estate, with full name, usually with birth date and sometimes with village name. E.g. Ledger “D” (file #15) image 1281 lists the heirs of Cornelius Wall of Bergfeld as recipients of estate money upon his death, giving only date of birth and in one case date of death. Abbreviations represent names of respective Waisenamt managers: CD – Cornelius Dueck; DW – Diedrich Wiebe; CTF – Cornelius T. Friesen; HGK – Hein G. Klippenstein; JE – Jacob Enns; HH – Hein Hildebrand. “Kapital” and “Capital” are used interchangeably: the file name takes the spelling used on the cover or first page of the respective ledger.
Location: volume 6312-6313.
