Wenger and Harold Bauman, February 23, 1959 [on informal letterhead of Chicago-Land All Mennonite Ministerial Association; Kauffman as Secretary for Home Missions and Evangelism; Nelson as Secretary for Relief and Service; Horst as Director of Voluntary Services; Mininger as President of Goshen College; Bender as Dean of Goshen College Biblical Seminary, Goshen Biblical Seminary; J. C. Wenger as at that seminary; Bauman as Pastor and Religious Counselor of Goshen College]: “all of you” shared interest in “the proposed seminar on the CITY CHURCH for Chicago this summer”; mention John Miller [John W. Horst, Chairman”, and at end designating that Fellowship and naming Laurence M. Horst, Mario O. Snyder, Paul O. King, LeRoy Kennel, Don Brenneman [Laurence Horst, Mario Snyder, Paul King, ?Donald Brenneman?]: the idea for the seminar had come from John Miller and apparently Reba Place Fellowship [John W. Miller, John Wolf Miller]; description of several meetings processing the idea; mention Virgil Vogt, Nelson Kauffman and Ray Horst, and Kennel, Brenneman, Snyder, and King; decisions outlined, including that leadership should come through “the channels that the Mennonite Church has set up”––Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities, Mennonite Relief and Service Committee, and possibly MCC; seminar title to be ‘A Study of “Building the Urban Church”’; greater detail, including how to promote the event and a sketch of the possible program. {2} Bender to Laurence Horst, November 29, 1960 [jjq jxx]: reference to Horst letter of November 19 [not extant here] to Bender and Paul Miller [?Paul M. Miller?]; that Bender was “fairly well acquainted with Ronald Goertz” and regarded him highly “as a person” and was “completely convinced that he is deeply committed to our basic Anabaptist principles and ... would like to work and fellowship in a Mennonite church”; although Goertz ’sjjj “basic theological training” was “in a somewhat liberal school”... he “is basically evangelical...
