The MMHS board established the Historic Sites and Monuments committee in 1995 upon the recommendation and proposal from Lawrence Klippenstein who became the committee's first chairman. The committee's purpose was to fill in the gap left behind by the former Local History and Historic Sites Committee when its focus shifted to the research and publishing of the West Reserve Historical Series. The Historic Sites and Monuments committee worked at locating sites of significance to Manitoba Mennonites, establishing cairns, recording cemetery locations and helping with the restoration of the Altbergthal School.
