Biographical history

Henry Peter Krehbiel was born in Summerfield, Illinois in 1862. Throughout his life Krehbiel worked closely with many Mennonite-related causes, promoting Bluffton College, serving as editor of the Mennonite publication Post and Volksblatt, and aiding in the organization of the Mennonite Settlers' Aid Society and the Mennonite Immigration Bureau. H.P. Krehbiel was also involved in the Mennonite Colonization Board (MCB) in the United States. Between the years 1924-1940 the MCB attempted to settle Russian Mennonites in Mexico. With in the MCB Krehbiel acted as an agent on behalf of the Mennonites.

Archival history

Krehbiel Collection housed at the Mennonite Library and Archives at Bethel College, Newton, Kansas. It was used by Winnipeg researcher Marianne Janzen and then deposited at the MHC in January of 1997.

The H.P. Krehbiel fonds consists of material related to Krehbiel's involvement with the Mennonite Colonization Board's efforts at settling Russian Menonites in Mexico. The files include correspondence with various individuals and institutions regarding Mennonite settlements in Roasario, San Juan, Las Aminas, El Trebol and Cuauhtemoc, applications for emigration to Mexico, settlers lists, detailing when and where they settled, and accounts regarding how the MCB assisted Mennonite settlers in Mexico.
