Biographical history
Gerhard G. Epp (1895-1969), son of a Reverend Gerhard Epp, was baptized on 7 July 1914 at the Eigenheim Rosenorter Church in Saskatchewan. In 1918 he married widow Justina Wiebe. In 1919 his home congregation elected him as an evangelist. In 1923 he was ordained as a minister by Reverend David Toews and in 1929 as a bishop (Aeltester).
Gerhard G. Epp replaced Aeltester Johann Gerbrandt as a member of the Home Missions Committee of the Conference of Mennonites in Canada (CMC) in 1932. Epp served in this capacity until 1956 (with the exception of 1944-1946), many of the years as secretary-treasurer. In 1945 he served for one year on the Bible Schools Committee, and in the following year he began serving as a CMC member of the Mennonite Central Relief Committee and remained active in it until 1959.
In 1948 Epp was elected as David Toews' successor on the General Conference Home Missions Board and held this position until 1959. One of the last committees that he served on was the Canadian Mennonite Bible College Board from 1957-1960.
Gerhard G. Epp died 30 July 1969 in Rosthern, Saskatchewan.
Repository
Archival history
Most of these records were generated by G.G. Epp in his capacity as Canadian representative on the General Conference Mennonite Church Home Missions Board (1948-1959). These records were deposited sometime between 1965 and 1974. It is unclear who brought them. Additional records were donated on April 3, 1995, as well as in 1998, by his daughter Mrs. Trudy Schmidt of Rosthern, and his son, Ewald Epp, publisher of Rosthern Valley News. Minister Henry Funk of Laird, Saskatchewan delivered these to the archives. Again, additional records were donated in 2023 by G.G. Epp's grandson, Larry Epp who had received the materials from his brother Gerald as well as their father Paul W. Epp.
Immediate source of acquisition or transfer
Trudy Schmidt, Ewald Epp, Larry Epp and unknown others.

Scope and content
This fonds consists of files created by G.G. Epp in his capacity as a church worker and conference committee member, including correspondence dealing with congregational donations, service programs and policy matters. It also consists of personal writing in diary form relating to his day-to-day life and news articles relating to him and his family. The news articles, by and large, follow the settlement of Eigenheim and the Church of that area.
