Retired in 1989 after a 35-year career in education having served as teacher, school administrator, inspector and culminating with 20 years as the Director of the Haldimand Board of Education in Ontario. Ordained as a lay minister in the Vineland United Mennonite Church in 1958, was vice-chair of the Conference of Mennonites in Canada, 1978-1980, and chair of the Conference of Mennonites in Canada, 1981-1986. Served on numerous other church boards from the 1960s to the late 1990s, including chair of the "Canadian Mennonite", several leadership roles with Conrad Grebel University College, Canadian Mennonite Bible College, United Mennonite Conference of Ontario and on the General Board of the General Conference Mennonite Church.
